Human civilization has never stood still. From the moment early communities learned to till the soil, to the era when factory smokestacks defined the skyline, to today’s world where a software update can reshape entire industries overnight – each leap forward has been powered by a fundamental shift in technology. Understanding how these transformations unfolded, and why they matter, is essential for making sense of the world we now live in. This is the story of how humanity moved through three great waves of change: the agricultural age, the industrial era, and the information society.

The first wave: agrarian societies and the roots of civilization

For most of recorded history, land was everything. Pre-industrial societies evolved from nomadic, hunter-gatherer groups into more settled communities as they discovered how to farm crops, domesticate animals, and use tools like the plow and irrigation system. These innovations did not just fill stomachs – they gave birth to villages, towns, and eventually the complex social structures that form the foundation of civilization.

Futurist Alvin Toffler described this era as the “First Wave” in his influential 1980 book The Third Wave. He characterized it as a period where land was the primary source of wealth and power, time moved in cycles governed by seasons and harvests, and communities were largely self-sufficient. Agrarian societies developed a higher degree of specialization than earlier societies – but by modern standards, the pace of change was extremely slow. Technological advances were mainly focused on improving agricultural productivity, and large-scale social or economic change was rare.

The social structure of agrarian societies was relatively rigid. Birth largely determined one’s station in life. Extended families working the land formed the basic economic unit, and knowledge was passed down through generations via direct experience rather than formal institutions. This world would be upended dramatically by the next great wave.

The second wave: the industrial revolution and its sweeping changes

The Industrial Revolution marked the process of change from an agrarian and handicraft economy to one dominated by industry and machine manufacturing – fundamentally transforming the way people lived and worked. Beginning in Britain in the mid-18th century, it spread across Europe and North America and eventually reshaped the entire globe.

The engine of change: new machines, new energy

The technological breakthroughs of this period were staggering in their scope. Key changes included the use of new materials like iron and steel, new energy sources such as coal and the steam engine, the invention of machines like the spinning jenny and power loom, and the rise of the factory system with its increased division of labour. The telegraph and later the telephone began shrinking distances, enabling faster trade and communication – early seeds of the connectivity that would define the next era.

These changes weren’t just economic. Industrialization is defined as the period of social and economic change that transforms a human group from an agrarian and feudal society into an industrial society. With factories concentrated in cities, workers flooded in from rural areas, leading to rapid urbanization. Family structures shifted from extended, multigenerational households to smaller nuclear families. The place of women in society began to shift from primary caregivers to breadwinners, and education systems expanded to meet the literacy demands of the new industrial economy.

The social cost of progress

The industrial era also brought serious downsides. Overcrowded cities, poor working conditions, and child labour were widespread. Workers acquired new skills but shifted from being craftsmen working with hand tools to machine operators subject to factory discipline – a fundamentally different relationship with one’s work. The era created enormous wealth for some while deepening inequalities for others, laying the groundwork for class conflict and labor movements that would shape the 20th century.

Still, the industrial era achieved something remarkable: it demonstrated that technology could transform the very structure of society, not just make individual tasks easier. That lesson would be applied on an even grander scale in the post-war decades.

The ICT revolution: seeds planted by World War II

The transition to the information age did not happen in a vacuum. The most direct forerunners of the Information Revolution appeared around World War II in the 1940s, a period marked by heavy government investment in new technologies, particularly those of use to the military. Electronics and computers developed for the war effort soon found broader applications in the business world.

A landmark example is ENIAC – the Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer. The demands of the war drove the rapid progression of computing technology, resulting in computers of unprecedented power. Similarly, radar technology, initially developed for military tracking, was adapted for meteorology by the 1950s, helping scientists track weather patterns and forecast daily changes. Research funded through wartime programs generated patents and capabilities that continued to shape industries for decades. Studies by economists at NBER have shown that doubling of wartime research patents was associated with significantly higher employment in communications and electronics manufacturing in the 1970s – a direct line from the war effort to post-war economic growth.

In the years following the Second World War, multiple countries – the US, Soviet Union, Western Europe, and East Asian nations – witnessed phenomenal productivity growth. This expansion lasted until the 1970s, when economic recession hit. But the 1970s also brought something new: a new wave of ICT-driven industrial change, marked by the systematic rise of electronics, telecommunications, and computers, which disrupted business and economic models by providing greater efficiency gains and novel modes of communication.

The third wave: welcome to the information society

The Information Age is a historical period that began in the mid-20th century, characterized by a rapid shift from traditional industries toward an economy centered on information technology. Its onset is widely linked to the development of the transistor in 1947 – a tiny component that made modern computing possible. Over the following decades, computers shrank from room-sized machines to devices that fit in a pocket. The internet moved from a military communications network to the backbone of global commerce, education, and culture.

Daniel Bell and the post-industrial society

The intellectual framework for understanding this transformation came largely from American sociologist Daniel Bell. Bell’s 1973 book, The Coming of Post-Industrial Society, argued that labor and manufacturing were being displaced by knowledge and services as the central forces of economic life. For Bell, this wasn’t just a shift in what people produced – it was a fundamental reorganization of society.

Bell argued that a radical transformation of economic and political structures was underway, in which changes in occupational structure, demographic patterns, and government investment in science and education would precipitate a shift to a society where theoretical knowledge was central and experts would be the primary advisors to government and business. He identified three stages of economic organization: pre-industrial (dominated by agriculture), industrial (dominated by manufacturing), and post-industrial (dominated by services and knowledge). The movement between these stages represents historical shifts in the bulk of the workforce – first from agriculture to manufacturing, then on to the service sector.

Importantly, Bell did not see these stages as neatly replacing one another. Bell argued that the new society would not displace the older one but rather overlie it – just as industrial society did not completely eradicate the agrarian sectors.

Knowledge as the new capital

What makes the information age genuinely distinct is not just the prevalence of computers and the internet – it is the new role of knowledge as a driver of economic value. Bell identified the novel and central feature of post-industrial society as the codification of theoretical knowledge and its new relationship to technology. In an industrial economy, value came from physical labor and machinery. In the information economy, value increasingly comes from ideas, data, expertise, and innovation.

Japanese futurist Tadao Masuda argued in his 1980 book The Information Society as Post-Industrial Society that society was shifting toward an era where the production, distribution, and manipulation of information would become the central focus of human activity – fundamentally altering labor markets, education, and political systems. This view has been validated by the emergence of entirely new economic sectors. ICT infrastructure has enabled technological innovation and diffusion, e-government and e-commerce, better decision-making in businesses, and structural changes to the economy and international trade.

The shift in employment: from fields to factories to screens

One of the most visible signs of each wave’s impact is where people work. By the late 20th century, the leading economic sectors – particularly in the United States – were those involving electronics, computers, high technology, telecommunications, and related service sectors. In the process, these technologies ushered in the information economy, centered on knowledge-based industries.

A key milestone came in 1956 in the United States, when white-collar workers outnumbered blue-collar laborers for the first time – a concrete signal that the economy’s center of gravity had shifted. This transformation reflects a societal change where theoretical knowledge becomes central, and the job market increasingly demands specialized skills, particularly in information technology.

New roles emerged that simply did not exist a generation earlier: software engineers, data scientists, cybersecurity analysts, digital marketers. At the same time, automation began displacing certain manufacturing and routine jobs, raising fresh questions about unemployment, skills gaps, and income inequality. The transition to an information-based knowledge economy has raised the requirements for literacy and education to whole new levels, and lifelong learning is now required for an increasing number of jobs.

Uneven progress: the promise and the problem

Every wave of technological transformation has delivered immense benefits alongside serious disruptions. The agricultural revolution ended nomadism but created rigid social hierarchies. The industrial revolution multiplied wealth but brought exploitation and environmental damage. The information age is no different.

Nations like South Korea and Finland have transformed themselves into innovation hubs by fostering a culture of lifelong learning and technological advancement, demonstrating that deliberate investment in education and ICT infrastructure can produce rapid economic development. At the individual level, access to the internet has democratized entrepreneurship and knowledge access in unprecedented ways.

But the benefits are not evenly distributed. The post-industrial society has produced what analysts call the “digital divide” – a gap between those who have access to technology and those who do not, which risks creating a new axis of inequality layered on top of existing economic ones. Bell himself raised concerns that access to information and technology would not be equally distributed, a warning that has proven prescient in the decades since.

Since the Second World War, academics have described and critiqued a fundamental shift from an industrial to a post-industrial economy, emphasizing the production and consumption of knowledge and symbolic goods as a higher-order economic activity – and debated what that means for equity, democracy, and human flourishing. These debates remain unresolved and urgent.

The three waves of technological transformation – agrarian, industrial, and informational – are not simply chapters in a history book. They are the forces that have shaped every institution, every career path, and every form of communication we use today. Understanding them is the first step toward navigating what comes next.
