In the documentary world, filmmakers typically work with a single camera, following subjects through locations and capturing events as they unfold with maximum portability and minimum intrusion.

Advantages of single-camera production

Greater creative control: The director can fine-tune framing, camera movement, and lighting for every individual shot. This level of precision produces a more polished, cinematic look that is difficult to achieve when multiple cameras must share the same space and lighting setup.

Flexibility in locations: A single camera rig is lightweight and easy to transport. It works well in tight spaces, outdoor locations, moving vehicles, or any environment where setting up multiple cameras would be impractical. This makes it ideal for on-location shoots, guerrilla filmmaking, and run-and-gun documentary work.

Post-production freedom: Because each angle is filmed independently, the editor has enormous latitude during post-production. According to production professionals, the reduced shooting schedule translates directly into savings on crew hours, studio rental, and talent fees – making this the preferred method for high-volume television output.

Disadvantages of multi-camera production

Less creative control per shot: Because multiple cameras must share the same space, lighting has to be a compromise that works adequately for all angles rather than being optimised for each one individually. The result is a flatter, more uniform visual style that lacks the cinematic depth of single-camera work.

This is technically still considered a single-camera style of production because the cameras are not covering different angles of the same set simultaneously in the multi-camera sense. The distinction lies in the methodology and workflow, not just the camera count.

How to choose the right type for your production

Selecting between single-camera and multi-camera production is not about which method is superior – it is about which one aligns with the specific needs of your project. Here are the key factors to consider:

Nature of the content: If the event is live, unrepeatable, or continuous – a concert, a sports match, a news broadcast – multi-camera is the clear choice. If the content is scripted, narrative-driven, or requires a polished cinematic look, single-camera is more appropriate.

Budget and schedule: A tight deadline and limited shooting days favour multi-camera production for its speed. A smaller equipment budget but more available time might make single-camera the better option.

Creative vision: If the director needs precise control over each frame’s composition, lighting, and camera movement, single-camera is the way to go. If the priority is capturing energy, spontaneity, and real-time audience interaction, multi-camera serves that goal better.

Venue and logistics: A cramped location or one that requires the crew to be unobtrusive suits a single-camera approach. A dedicated studio with fixed sets and technical infrastructure is built for multi-camera work.

The role of technology in modern production

Advances in camera technology, remote-controlled PTZ (pan-tilt-zoom) cameras, and AI-assisted camera tracking are reshaping both production styles. PTZ cameras, for example, allow a single operator to control several cameras remotely, making multi-camera production feasible with smaller crews. On the single-camera side, lightweight mirrorless cameras, affordable gimbal stabilisers, and high-quality smartphone cameras have made professional-looking footage accessible to solo filmmakers and small teams.
