What is post-production in radio?
Post-production refers to everything that happens after the recording (production) phase is complete. In a radio context, this primarily involves editing, mixing, adding sound elements, and quality assurance before the programme is cleared for broadcast. While pre-production handles planning and scripting, and production captures the audio, post-production is where all the pieces come together into a coherent, professional final product.
The process applies equally to pre-recorded radio shows, documentaries, dramas, advertisements, and even podcast-style content intended for radio distribution. At its core, post-production serves one goal: ensuring the final audio meets the broadcaster’s standards and the audience’s expectations in terms of clarity, pacing, and engagement.
Why post-production matters
No recording session is ever perfect. Even with professional-grade microphones, a quiet studio, and experienced presenters, raw audio will contain imperfections. These can range from stuttered words and mispronunciations to background hums, uneven volume levels, or long pauses where a host was looking for their next question. Listeners are remarkably unforgiving of poor audio quality – a persistent buzz or a sudden volume spike is enough to make someone switch the station.
Post-production acts as the quality control checkpoint. It’s where an editor removes those imperfections and shapes the raw material into a programme that flows naturally. Beyond fixing errors, post-production also adds creative elements – background music, sound effects, transitions – that elevate the content from a simple recording to a compelling broadcast. In a competitive media landscape, this attention to detail is what separates an amateur effort from a professional one.

Post-production is not a single task but a series of interconnected processes. Each component plays a specific role in refining the final product.
Audio editing
Editing is the first and most fundamental step. It involves reviewing the raw recordings and making structural decisions: what stays, what goes, and in what order. The editor works inside a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) – software such as Audacity, Adobe Audition, or Avid Pro Tools – which displays audio as visual waveforms on a timeline.
The primary tasks during editing include:
Removing mistakes and flubs. Stuttered words, false starts, and mispronounced names are cut out so the speaker sounds clear and articulate. Eliminating dead air. Long, unintentional silences between questions and answers are trimmed to maintain the programme’s pace. Cutting filler words. Excessive “ums,” “ahs,” and “you knows” are reduced. Keeping a few makes the speech sound natural; keeping all of them makes the speaker sound unprepared. Removing unwanted noise. Background sounds – air conditioning hum, a door closing in another room, or a phone buzzing – are identified and removed. Rearranging segments. Sometimes, the best version of a programme requires reordering sections from how they were originally recorded. An editor might move a particularly strong quote to the opening, or shift a segment for better narrative flow.
Editing is as much about pacing as it is about correction. A good editor knows that the rhythm of a conversation – the pauses, the beats, the energy shifts – is what keeps a listener engaged. This is why editing is often described as an art, not just a technical task.
Audio mixing
Once individual audio elements are cleaned and edited, they need to be combined. This process is called mixing. A typical radio programme isn’t just one audio track – it might include the host’s voice, a guest’s voice recorded on a separate microphone, background music, sound effects, pre-recorded jingles, and ambient sound. Each of these sits on its own track within the DAW.
Mixing involves balancing all these elements so they work together harmoniously. The key tasks include:
Level balancing. The volume of each track is adjusted so that the host’s voice isn’t drowned out by background music, and a sound effect doesn’t suddenly blast louder than the narration. Panning. In stereo broadcasts, elements can be placed in the left or right channel to create a sense of space. For example, in a radio drama, one character’s voice might come slightly from the left while another comes from the right. Equalization (EQ). EQ is used to adjust the frequency content of audio. A voice that sounds muddy might need a boost in the higher frequencies for clarity, while a music bed might need its lower frequencies reduced so it doesn’t interfere with the spoken word. Compression. A compressor reduces the dynamic range of audio – it makes quiet parts louder and loud parts quieter. This ensures a consistent listening volume, which is especially important for radio where listeners are often in cars or noisy environments. Crossfades and transitions. Smooth transitions between segments – a music bed fading in as a voice fades out, for instance – are crafted during the mix to maintain seamless flow.
Adding music and sound effects
Music and sound effects are powerful storytelling tools in radio. Background music sets the emotional tone: an upbeat track energizes a morning show, while a soft, slow piece adds gravity to a documentary segment. Sound effects – a door slamming, rain falling, a crowd cheering – create an immersive audio environment that pulls listeners into the narrative.
During post-production, these elements are selected, timed, and layered into the programme. The key is subtlety. Music should support the content, not compete with it. Sound effects should feel natural, not forced. Overuse of either can make a programme feel cluttered and amateurish. A well-placed musical sting between segments, on the other hand, can give a show a professional, polished identity.
Noise reduction and audio repair
Even with careful recording, some audio issues only become apparent during post-production. Audio plugins extend the capabilities of DAWs. These include noise reduction plugins, equalizers, compressors, limiters, and reverb tools. They allow fine-grained control over every aspect of the sound. Monitoring equipment – professional headphones and studio monitors – is essential for accurate listening during the editing and mixing process. What sounds acceptable on laptop speakers may reveal problems on professional monitors, and vice versa.
Meeting broadcast standards
Radio programmes don’t just need to sound good – they need to meet specific technical standards before they can be broadcast. One of the most important is loudness compliance. Broadcasting organisations use standardised loudness measurements, most commonly LUFS (Loudness Units relative to Full Scale), to ensure consistent audio levels across different programmes, advertisements, and stations.
The goal is simple: a listener should not have to constantly adjust their volume when switching between programmes or when a commercial break begins. In the United States, the CALM Act was passed in 2010 specifically to address the long-standing complaint that TV and radio commercials were significantly louder than regular programming. The act mandated that broadcast audio adhere to the ITU-R BS.1770 loudness standard.
During post-production, the engineer uses loudness meters to ensure the final mix falls within the required range – typically around -24 LKFS for broadcast content. If the audio is too quiet, it will sound weak next to other programmes. If it’s too loud, it may be compressed further by the broadcast chain, resulting in a distorted, unpleasant sound. Mastering – the final polish applied to the mixed audio – addresses this by optimizing the programme’s overall loudness, dynamic range, and tonal balance for the target platform.
The post-production workflow: step by step
While every production is different, a typical radio post-production workflow follows a fairly consistent pattern.
Step 1: Importing and organising files. All raw recordings are loaded into the DAW, labelled clearly (e.g., “Host intro,” “Guest interview segment 2,” “Music bed A”), and arranged on the timeline. Good file organisation at this stage saves significant time later. Step 2: Rough edit. The editor listens through the material, makes initial cuts, removes obvious errors, and assembles a rough structure of the programme. Step 3: Fine edit. The rough cut is refined. Pacing is tightened, filler words are trimmed, and the narrative flow is polished. Step 4: Adding music and effects. Background music, jingles, sound effects, and transitions are layered in. Step 5: Mixing. All tracks are balanced, EQ’d, compressed, and panned to create a cohesive final mix. Step 6: Mastering. The mixed file is optimised for broadcast loudness standards and exported in the required format – typically a high-quality WAV file or a broadcast-standard MP3. Step 7: Final review. The finished programme is listened to in its entirety, ideally after a short break to reset the ears. This quality assurance step checks for any remaining issues before the programme is approved for broadcast.
The final assessment: knowing when to let go
One of the most overlooked aspects of post-production is the final assessment. After hours spent editing and mixing, it’s easy to lose objectivity. A good practice is to step away from the project – for a few hours or even a day – and then listen to the finished programme from start to finish as if hearing it for the first time.
During this listen, the producer must evaluate whether the programme achieves its original objectives. Does the content deliver value to the target audience? Is the pacing engaging? Are there any distracting technical issues? Is the overall sound consistent and professional?
Sometimes, despite technically competent editing and mixing, the content simply doesn’t work. The guest may have been too nervous, the host may have missed the point of the topic, or a persistent audio flaw couldn’t be fully repaired. A true professional is willing to acknowledge when a programme needs to be reworked or even re-recorded entirely. Releasing substandard content damages a broadcaster’s reputation far more than a missed deadline.
Common challenges in post-production
Post-production is not without its difficulties. Tight deadlines are a constant reality in broadcasting. A daily news programme may have only a few hours for post-production, requiring editors to work quickly without sacrificing quality. Budget constraints can limit access to professional tools and trained personnel, particularly in community radio or educational settings. Poor source audio – recorded in noisy environments or with inadequate equipment – creates problems that even advanced noise reduction tools struggle to fully resolve. The old saying in audio production holds true: “you can’t polish a bad recording.” This is precisely why investing effort in the pre-production and production stages remains essential.
Addressing these challenges requires a combination of effective planning, ongoing training, and the use of appropriate technology. Allocating sufficient time for post-production during the project planning phase, investing in even basic training for DAW software, and establishing clear collaborative workflows all contribute to a smoother process and a better final product.
Post-production in the digital age
The digital revolution has transformed radio post-production. Tasks that once required physically cutting and splicing magnetic tape – as was standard practice in broadcast studios for decades – can now be done with a few mouse clicks in a DAW. Non-destructive editing means changes can be undone at any point, encouraging experimentation without risk.
Cloud-based collaboration tools now allow production teams to work on the same project from different locations. A reporter in the field can upload raw audio that an editor in the studio begins working on almost immediately. AI-powered tools are increasingly being used for tasks like automatic transcription, noise removal, and even basic editing, speeding up workflows while keeping the creative decisions in human hands.
Despite these advances, the fundamental principles of post-production remain unchanged. It’s still about making choices – what to keep, what to cut, how loud, how soft, when to let silence speak – that serve the story and the listener.
