The production stage is where a radio programme truly comes to life. All the planning, scripting, and scheduling done during pre-production finally meets the microphone. This is the phase where audio content is actively recorded – voices captured, sound effects layered, and interviews conducted. Whether it happens inside a soundproofed studio or at a packed outdoor stadium, the production stage is the beating heart of the radio workflow. Let’s break down how it works, what equipment is involved, and why the setting matters so much.

What exactly is the production stage?

In radio production, the entire process is typically divided into three broad phases: pre-production, production, and post-production. The production stage is the middle phase – the actual recording of audio content. Everything that was decided during pre-production (scripts, guest bookings, equipment checks, music selections) is now put into action in front of a microphone.

The goal during production is straightforward: capture the cleanest, highest-quality audio possible. A poor recording at this stage is extremely difficult to fix later. You can edit out a cough or trim a long pause in post-production, but you cannot truly rescue a recording that was muddy, distorted, or full of background noise from the start. That’s why getting it right during production is critical.

The production stage primarily takes place in two types of settings – the studio and the field (also known as an outside broadcast or OB). Each setting has its own technical requirements, challenges, and advantages.

Studio recording: the controlled environment

For the majority of radio programmes – talk shows, news bulletins, interviews, radio dramas, music shows – the production stage happens inside a recording studio. A radio studio is a purpose-built room designed for one primary objective: capturing pure, distortion-free sound in a fully controlled environment.

The physical layout of a radio studio

A modern radio studio typically consists of two connected rooms separated by a large glass window. The first is the booth (also called the studio or live room), where the presenter, guests, and voice actors sit and speak into microphones. The second is the control room, where the producer and technical engineer operate the equipment.

This separation serves a crucial purpose. The producer can monitor audio levels, adjust the mix, and communicate with the presenter without any of those operational sounds bleeding into the recording. Communication between the two rooms happens through a talkback system – a button on the mixing console that lets the producer speak directly into the presenter’s headphones without being recorded on the programme’s output.

Soundproofing and acoustic treatment

Two technical features make a radio studio fundamentally different from an ordinary room:

Soundproofing keeps external noise out. Thick walls, sealed doors, and double-glazed windows prevent sounds from the outside world – traffic, air conditioning hum, footsteps in a corridor – from entering the recording space. You don’t want a police siren ruining a dramatic scene in a radio play.

Acoustic treatment controls how sound behaves inside the room. Specially designed foam panels and diffusers absorb sound reflections, preventing echo and reverb. This creates what audio engineers call a “dead” sound – an environment that may feel slightly unnatural to stand in, but is ideal for recording. It gives the engineer a clean audio track to which they can add effects like reverb or EQ during post-production, as and when needed.

You’ll also notice a “Recording” or “On Air” light outside the studio door. This is a functional signal telling everyone nearby to remain silent because a recording or live broadcast is in progress.

Essential studio equipment

A radio studio requires several key pieces of equipment working together to capture and manage audio:

Microphones are the starting point of the entire audio chain. Studios use different types depending on the application. Large-diaphragm condenser microphones are popular for recording a single voice because they capture detail and nuance with high sensitivity. Dynamic microphones are often preferred for multi-speaker environments because they reject background noise better. Microphones are typically mounted on adjustable boom arms and paired with pop filters or windscreens to reduce plosive sounds (the harsh bursts of air from “p” and “b” sounds).

The mixing console (also called a mixing desk or audio board) is the central hub of the studio. It receives audio signals from all sources – microphones, music players, phone-in lines, pre-recorded clips – and allows the engineer to control the volume, equalization, and routing of each signal. Broadcast mixing consoles have specific features like automatic speaker muting when a microphone channel is activated (to prevent feedback) and integration with playout software.

Headphones are essential for both the presenter and the producer. They allow everyone to hear the live audio feed without speakers that could create feedback loops. The presenter wears them to monitor their own voice and any audio being played into the programme.

An audio processor sits at the end of the signal chain before broadcast or recording. It compresses the dynamic range of the audio, ensuring a consistent volume level and adding the characteristic “radio sound” to the voice. It also prevents clipping and distortion that could occur from sudden loud sounds.

Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) are software applications used to record, edit, and arrange audio. Common examples include Adobe Audition, Audacity (which is free and open-source), and Logic Pro. During the production stage, the DAW captures the audio onto the computer’s hard drive, often recording multiple separate tracks simultaneously for greater flexibility in post-production.

Recording for different programme formats

The production process inside a studio is not one-size-fits-all. Different types of radio programmes demand different recording approaches.

News bulletins and talk shows

News bulletins are typically fully scripted. The presenter reads from a prepared script, and the engineer plays in pre-recorded audio clips (called “cuts” or “grabs”) from correspondents and interviewees at the appropriate moment. The focus is on clarity, accuracy, and pacing. Talk shows and interview programmes may be semi-scripted, with a written introduction and a list of planned questions, but the actual conversation flows more naturally. The engineer’s role here is to manage audio levels across multiple speakers, ensuring all voices are equally clear.

Radio drama

Radio drama production is the most complex studio format. It involves recording dialogue from multiple voice actors, layering in sound effects and music, and creating a complete audio world for the listener. Sound effects in radio drama come from two main sources: pre-recorded digital libraries and Foley – sounds created live in the studio by a Foley artist. Classic Foley techniques include crinkling cellophane to simulate a crackling fire, clapping coconut shells together for horse hooves, or opening and closing a small prop door for a scene transition.

The producer directs the actors’ performances while the engineer balances dialogue, music, and effects in real time to build a convincing sonic environment.

Music programmes

For music shows, the production stage often follows a run-sheet (or cue-sheet) – a minute-by-minute schedule specifying exactly when each song plays, when the presenter talks, when advertisements air, and when jingles are triggered. The engineer’s job is to ensure smooth transitions between all these elements, maintaining consistent audio quality throughout.

Outside broadcast (OB): recording in the field

Not every radio programme can be made inside a studio. When the story is at a cricket match, a political rally, a music festival, or the scene of a breaking news event, the production stage moves out into the real world. This is called an outside broadcast (OB), sometimes also referred to as a “remote.”

What is an outside broadcast?

An outside broadcast is the production and transmission of radio or television content from a location away from the main studio. The term “outside” doesn’t necessarily mean outdoors – it simply means outside the studio building. An OB could take place inside a concert hall, a parliament building, or a sports arena just as easily as in an open field.

OB has a long history in radio. The BBC conducted its first outside broadcast on 8 January 1923, relaying a performance of Mozart’s The Magic Flute from London’s Royal Opera House. Since then, outside broadcasting has become central to covering live events of all kinds.

Equipment for outside broadcasts

The challenge of an OB is to replicate, as closely as possible, the capabilities of a studio in an uncontrolled environment. This requires portable, robust equipment:

Portable audio recorders are compact, battery-powered devices that can capture high-quality audio in the field. They’re used by reporters and correspondents for interviews and vox pops (short opinion clips from members of the public).

Portable mixers are smaller versions of the studio mixing console, designed for field use. They allow an engineer to mix multiple audio sources (reporter’s microphone, ambient sound, interview microphone) on location.

OB vans or trucks are essentially mobile control rooms. For large-scale events – sports coverage, national celebrations, election night broadcasts – broadcasters deploy specially designed vehicles loaded with mixing consoles, monitors, transmission equipment, and communication systems. These mobile units allow a full production team to operate on location with nearly the same control they’d have in a permanent studio.

Transmission equipment is what sends the recorded or live audio back to the main studio or directly to listeners. This can include satellite uplinks, fibre optic connections, or cellular-based IP codecs that use 4G/5G networks to transmit audio in real time. The choice of transmission method depends on the location, budget, and whether the broadcast is live or pre-recorded.

Challenges of outside broadcasting

Unlike the controlled studio environment, an OB location presents a host of unpredictable challenges:

Ambient noise is the biggest issue. Crowd noise, wind, traffic, and other environmental sounds can interfere with the clarity of the recording. Engineers use directional microphones (which pick up sound primarily from one direction) and windshields to mitigate this, but some ambient sound is often desirable – the roar of a crowd at a football match, for example, adds authenticity and atmosphere to the broadcast.

Power supply can be unreliable in outdoor locations. OB teams typically carry generators or ensure access to a reliable municipal power source, along with backup battery systems for critical equipment.

Signal transmission can be disrupted by physical obstacles, weather conditions, or RF interference. Redundant signal paths – having at least two independent methods for transmitting audio – are standard practice for professional OB operations to guard against signal failure.

Logistics and access add another layer of complexity. Large outdoor events often have security restrictions, limited parking for OB vans, and tight setup windows. Getting the right cables run, the right power sources secured, and the right access passes arranged all require advance coordination.

The recce: planning an outside broadcast

Because of these challenges, the most critical part of any OB is what happens before the recording starts – the recce (short for reconnaissance). This is a pre-production site visit where the OB team surveys the location in advance. They assess where the OB van can be parked, where power and connectivity are available, what the acoustic environment is like, and what logistical permissions are needed.

Experienced broadcast professionals often say that for an OB, planning accounts for 90% of the success. The actual recording on the day, if the recce was done well, should proceed relatively smoothly.

Studio vs. outside broadcast: key differences

Understanding when to use a studio and when to go into the field is a core production decision. Here’s how the two settings compare on important factors:

Sound quality control: The studio offers near-total control over the acoustic environment. In an OB, the team must work with – and around – whatever ambient sound exists at the location.

Equipment: Studio equipment is permanently installed, calibrated, and maintained. OB equipment must be portable, durable, and often battery-powered, which means some trade-offs in capability.

Atmosphere and authenticity: This is where OB wins. A live radio interview at an event, with real crowd sounds and environmental texture, creates a far more engaging and authentic listening experience than the same interview conducted in a sterile studio.

Risk: Studio recording is low-risk because the environment is predictable. OB carries higher risk due to weather, technical failures, power issues, and logistical complications – but the payoff in authenticity and immediacy can be significant.

The role of the production team

Regardless of setting, the production stage requires a coordinated team working in sync:

The producer oversees the creative and editorial direction. They decide what gets recorded, direct the presenters and guests, and make real-time decisions about content and timing.

The technical engineer (or studio engineer) manages all the equipment – microphones, the mixing console, recording software, and transmission links. They are responsible for audio quality, ensuring that levels are correct, there’s no distortion, and the signal chain is functioning properly.

The presenter or talent is the voice of the programme. Their job is to deliver content clearly and engagingly while following the producer’s direction and the programme’s script or run-sheet.

In smaller operations (like community radio or podcasting), one person may fill two or even all three of these roles. In large-scale professional broadcasts, each role – and many sub-roles – is handled by a separate specialist.

Why the production stage matters

The production stage is where the raw material of a radio programme is created. Post-production can polish and refine a recording, but it cannot manufacture quality that wasn’t captured in the first place. A well-planned, well-executed recording session – whether in a studio with pristine acoustics or on location at a bustling event – provides the foundation that the rest of the production process builds upon.

This is why experienced radio professionals invest so much effort in getting the production stage right: choosing the correct microphones, setting up the studio properly, conducting a thorough recce for an OB, and ensuring every member of the team knows their role. The moment the “Record” button is pressed, everything that was planned is put to the test.
