Room treatment and monitoring

Distance manipulation: Actors move closer to or further from the microphone to simulate changing physical distances in the narrative. Human speech typically occupies the 300 Hz to 3 kHz range. A subtle dip in the music at those frequencies can make the presenter far more intelligible without noticeably reducing the music’s fullness.
Parallel recording paths – recording music and presenter on completely separate tracks – give you maximum flexibility in the mix. You can adjust the balance between music and voice at any point during editing without compromise.
Universal recording principles across all formats
While every format has its specific demands, certain technical fundamentals apply to all radio recording.
Level management
Regardless of format, maintain average recording levels around -12 to -14 dBFS with peaks no higher than -3 dBFS. This gives you sufficient headroom to avoid clipping (digital distortion caused by the signal exceeding maximum levels) while keeping the signal well above the noise floor. Modern digital recording equipment is clean enough that recording at conservative levels does not introduce noticeable hiss.
Acoustic environment
Poor room acoustics can undermine even the best microphones and recording equipment. Reverb and echo are extremely difficult to remove in post-production.
