Do we want to document what’s happening in the media landscape right now? Do we want to understand why audiences behave the way they do? Are we trying to build a new theory or solve a pressing industry problem? The answer determines which type of research you reach for. This post breaks down the major types of research in mass communication – descriptive, analytical, applied, fundamental, quantitative, qualitative, conceptual, and empirical – and explains what each one does, how it works, and why it matters.

Research in mass communications encompasses the systematic investigation of media content, audiences, and effects – and the diversity of those topics demands a diversity of research approaches. Choosing the wrong type of research for a question is like using the wrong tool for a job; the result will be imprecise or misleading. Understanding these classifications helps journalists, media scholars, and communication professionals ask better questions and find more reliable answers.
Descriptive research: documenting the media landscape
Descriptive research is the starting point of most inquiry. It focuses on the “what” – capturing an accurate picture of the current state of affairs without attempting to explain the causes behind it. In mass communication, this might mean cataloguing the types of stories that dominate prime-time news, tracking how often women are featured in leadership roles in print media, or documenting patterns of social media use across age groups.

Fundamental research – also called basic or pure research – operates at the opposite end of the spectrum from applied research. Its driving force is intellectual curiosity, not immediate utility. It asks broad, foundational questions: How does repeated media exposure shape long-term attitudes? What are the underlying mechanisms of agenda-setting? How do audiences construct meaning from news narratives?
Fundamental research generates the theories, concepts, and models that improve our understanding of complex phenomena – and applied research later draws on those foundations to address practical problems. The two are deeply interdependent. Rather than being distinct categories, basic and applied research exist on a continuum; many studies address fundamental questions while also considering practical implications. In mass communication, foundational studies on media effects – such as cultivation theory or the two-step flow of communication – originated as fundamental research and have since informed decades of applied work in advertising, political communication, and public health campaigns.
Quantitative research: the power of measurable data
Quantitative research is built on numbers. It collects and analyzes numerical data to identify patterns, test hypotheses, and establish cause-and-effect relationships at scale. Surveys, experiments, and content analyses are common quantitative approaches that allow researchers to measure media exposure, audience attitudes, and the content of media messages in a systematic way.
In a practical mass communication context, a quantitative study might survey 5,000 respondents to measure trust levels in online news sources, or use content analysis to count the ratio of positive to negative framing in 300 newspaper articles about climate change. The strength of quantitative research is its capacity for generalizability – findings from a well-drawn sample can be applied to a broader population with statistical confidence. A study on the impact of a public health communication campaign might first use surveys to measure behavioral change at scale, then follow up with focus groups to understand the emotional and contextual reasons behind those changes – what researchers call a mixed-methods approach.
Conceptual research: theorizing without experimentation
Conceptual research operates in the realm of ideas. It does not involve collecting original data or running experiments; instead, it synthesizes existing knowledge, theories, and frameworks to develop new conceptual insights or refine existing ones. The conceptual researcher works by thinking through existing observations and evidence, aiming to make sense of them through new theoretical lenses.
In mass communication, conceptual research is used to critique and develop communication models, propose new frameworks for understanding media influence, or reinterpret existing theories in light of digital media transformations. For example, a scholar might conduct conceptual research to re-examine the applicability of gatekeeping theory in the age of social media algorithms – not by running a new experiment, but by analyzing what existing studies collectively suggest and building a refined theoretical argument. Conceptual research is particularly valuable in fields where empirical data may be limited or difficult to obtain, as it provides a theoretical foundation that guides future empirical investigations. It is the kind of work that reshapes how an entire field thinks about a problem.
Empirical research: grounded in observable evidence
Empirical research is defined by its insistence on real-world evidence. Rather than working from theory alone, it collects data through direct observation, experiments, or lived experience, and uses that data to draw conclusions. Empirical research draws its conclusions from evidence that is verifiable by observation or experience, rather than from theory or pure logic.
In mass communication, empirical research might involve conducting a field experiment to test whether exposure to corrective journalism reduces belief in a specific conspiracy theory, or running a content analysis to observe how a particular news event was framed across different media outlets over time. Critically, empirical research is not limited to one methodology – both quantitative and qualitative approaches can be empirical, as long as the conclusions are grounded in data collected from the real world. Empirical research is particularly useful in applied fields where practical implications and real-world applications are of primary importance, which makes it central to evidence-based policy, journalism standards, and media regulation debates.
How these types work together
It is important to understand that these research types are not mutually exclusive – they overlap, inform, and build on each other. A piece of fundamental research might be empirical in method and quantitative in approach. An applied research project might begin with conceptual work to refine its theoretical framework before moving to qualitative data collection. Descriptive research often precedes analytical research, providing the documented baseline that analytical study then seeks to explain.
Many studies combine elements of both fundamental and applied inquiry – addressing theoretical questions while simultaneously yielding practical recommendations. The richest mass communication research tends to draw on multiple types in sequence, building from description to analysis, from theory to application, and from concept to evidence. Understanding which type of research fits a given question is not an academic exercise – it is the first and most consequential decision a researcher makes.
