What is the research process in mass communication?
Research in mass communications is the systematic investigation and study of mass media – its content, its audiences, and its effects. The “research process” refers to the complete sequence of steps a researcher follows from the moment an idea strikes to the moment a final report is submitted. According to scholars at the Leicester Centre for Mass Communication Research, good research begins with a clear understanding of principles before methods are chosen – because the right method for one research question may be entirely wrong for another. The process is not a straight line but a carefully ordered sequence where each step informs the next.
Step 1: Identifying and defining the research problem
Every research project begins with a problem – a question that needs answering or a gap in knowledge that needs to be filled. In mass communication, this could be anything from understanding how misinformation spreads on social media to measuring the impact of reality television on body image among teenagers. The problem must be specific enough to be studied but significant enough to be worth studying.
According to research published in the Journal of Respiratory Care, the research question should meet the FINER criteria – it must be Feasible, Interesting, Novel, Ethical, and Relevant. Applying this filter at the very start prevents researchers from investing time in questions that are too broad, already answered, or impossible to test within real-world constraints. A poorly defined problem leads to poor data, which leads to unreliable conclusions. Getting this step right is non-negotiable.
Step 2: Reviewing existing literature
Once the problem is clear, the next step is to find out what has already been studied on the topic. This is called the literature review. It is not merely a summary of what others have written – it is a critical, organized synthesis of existing knowledge that positions your research within the broader academic conversation.

Step 3: Formulating the hypothesis or research questions
After the literature review, you are ready to state precisely what you expect to find – or what you want to explore. This takes one of two forms: a research question or a hypothesis.
A research question is open-ended and exploratory. For example: “How does binge-watching streaming content affect sleep patterns among college students?” A hypothesis, on the other hand, is a specific, testable prediction about the relationship between two or more variables.
