The world’s population crossed the 8 billion mark in November 2022 – a milestone that took hundreds of thousands of years of human history to reach. Yet the next billion is expected in just 15 years. But beyond the headline numbers, the more compelling story lies in where people live, why they congregate where they do, and how that picture is set to change dramatically by 2050 and beyond. The global population is not just growing – it is shifting, aging, and redistributing itself across continents in ways that will reshape economies, ecosystems, and societies for generations.

A world unevenly inhabited
Population is not spread evenly across the Earth’s surface. Only about 11% of the Earth’s land surface is comfortably habitable for humans, which immediately explains much of the clustering we observe. Population distribution describes the pattern of where people live, while population density refers to the number of people per unit area – and the two together reveal a striking imbalance in how humanity occupies the planet.
Today, about 60% of the world’s people live in Asia and 17% in Africa, while Europe’s share has already fallen to around 10%. Asia alone is home to the planet’s two most populous countries – India and China, each with over 1.4 billion people. By contrast, vast stretches of Siberia, the Sahara, the Amazon basin, and the polar regions remain almost entirely empty.
What shapes where people live?
The reasons behind this uneven distribution are layered and interconnected. They fall broadly into physical (geographical) factors and human (socioeconomic) factors.
Physical and geographical factors
Terrain, climate, soil quality, and access to water are foundational. Lowland plains, fertile river valleys, and areas with moderate climates tend to have high population densities, while mountainous terrain, extreme cold, extreme aridity, and dense tropical forests repel settlement. The Gangetic Plain in South Asia, for instance, has sustained enormous populations for millennia because of its fertile alluvial soil and reliable water supply from the Himalayas. The Sahara and Antarctic interiors, by contrast, have near-zero density.
Natural disaster risk also plays a role. Areas prone to geological hazards, pests, and disease have historically discouraged dense settlement, although economic pressures sometimes override that caution.
Socioeconomic and human factors
As important as geography is, human factors are increasingly dominant in the modern era. Population distribution and density are shaped by geopolitical structures, levels of economic development, and quality-of-life indicators such as education, healthcare, housing, and employment opportunities. Industrial corridors, port cities, and trade hubs pull people in; areas with poor governance, conflict, or limited infrastructure push them out.
Urbanisation is a central driver of this redistribution. Cities offer employment, education, and healthcare that rural areas often cannot match, triggering massive rural-to-urban migration particularly in developing countries. Political decisions also matter: governments can steer population through investment in new cities, infrastructure projects, or incentive programmes in underpopulated regions. Historical settlement patterns, cultural ties to particular places, and social infrastructure all further compound these dynamics.
Where the numbers stand now – and where they are headed
According to the UN’s World Population Prospects (2024 Revision), the global population stands at about 8.1 billion in 2024, and is projected to reach approximately 9.6 billion by 2050. After that, growth is expected to slow considerably, with the population potentially peaking somewhere between the mid-2060s and 2100 before beginning to decline.
The distribution of that growth, however, is highly uneven – and the divergence between Asia and Africa is the defining demographic story of this century.
Asia: dominant but decelerating
Asia will remain the world’s most populous continent well into the 21st century. Population growth in Asia is projected to slow significantly, with China expected to experience negative growth from 2030 onwards, while India’s population will continue to grow for some decades before also stabilising.
Asia’s share of global population is projected to fall from 60% in 2020 to around 55% by 2050, and further to 45% by 2100. This is not because Asia’s population will shrink dramatically in the near term, but because other regions – particularly Africa – will grow far faster. Asia is also ageing rapidly: the proportion of Asians aged over 65 is expected to triple from around 7% today to 21% by 2050, with China projected to reach nearly 27% elderly by mid-century. An ageing population places enormous pressure on pension systems, healthcare infrastructure, and labour markets.
Africa: the century’s growth engine
The most dramatic demographic shift of the coming decades will occur in Africa. Africa’s share of the global population is projected to grow from 17% in 2020 to 25% by 2050 and as high as 38% by 2100. Sub-Saharan Africa alone is expected to see a 79% population rise, reaching 2.2 billion by 2054, potentially growing to 3.3 billion by the end of the century.
This growth is driven by a combination of still-high fertility rates and a very young population already entering reproductive age. The UN projects that Nigeria’s population will grow by around 340 million people to become the world’s third most populous country, surpassing the United States. Half of all projected global population growth between 2020 and 2050 will come from just eight countries – five of them in Africa: Nigeria, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Egypt, alongside India, Pakistan, and Indonesia.
Europe and the Americas: a different trajectory
Europe is heading in the opposite direction. Europe’s population is likely to shrink from around 748 million in 2020 to approximately 630 million by 2100, with deaths already exceeding births in the EU-27 since 2015. In the European Union as a whole, population growth has been sustained entirely by immigration, as natural population change has turned negative. Countries like the USA, Canada, and Australia face similar fertility challenges but are projected to maintain working-age populations through immigration.
The three drivers of population change
Behind every population trend are three core demographic forces: fertility, mortality, and migration. These three factors – births, deaths, and movement – determine whether a population grows, shrinks, or stabilises. Understanding how they interact is essential to grasping why the world looks the way it does demographically.
Fertility: fewer children, but not everywhere
Total Fertility Rate (TFR) measures the average number of children a woman is expected to have over her lifetime. A TFR of about 2.1 is considered the “replacement level” – the rate at which a population just replaces itself without growth or decline. The global fertility rate currently stands at 2.25 live births per woman, and is projected to decline to 2.1 by the late 2040s.
In the 1960s, the average global fertility rate was nearly five births per woman; by 2024, it had fallen to 2.2 – a dramatic shift driven by greater access to contraception, rising female education levels, and women’s increasing participation in the workforce. However, fertility remains well above replacement level across much of sub-Saharan Africa, where TFR can exceed 4-5 children per woman in some countries. Countries with high fertility tend to also have high rates of food insecurity and child mortality, which historically incentivise larger families as a form of economic insurance.
Research published in The Lancet and the Global Burden of Disease Study found that continued improvements in female educational attainment and access to contraception would significantly accelerate fertility declines and slow global population growth. If Sustainable Development Goal targets in these areas were fully met, global population in 2100 could be as low as 6.3 billion – far below UN medium projections.
Mortality: living longer, but unevenly
Declining mortality rates have been the other side of the population growth story. Global life expectancy at birth reached 73.3 years in 2024, an increase of 8.4 years since 1995, and is projected to rise to around 77.4 years by 2054. In the least developed countries, however, life expectancy still lags behind the global average by about seven years – a gap that reflects profound disparities in healthcare access, nutrition, and infrastructure.
The number of people aged 60 or above globally is expected to more than double by 2050, rising from 962 million in 2017 to 2.1 billion – and to exceed 3.1 billion by 2100. This global greying is not just a developed-world issue. Even Africa, which has the youngest age structure today, will see the proportion of its population aged 60 and over rise from 5% in 2017 to nearly 20% by the end of the century. An older world demands more from social protection systems, healthcare, and pensions – resources that many developing nations are not yet equipped to provide at scale.
Migration: the great equaliser?
Migration is the third demographic driver – and in some countries, the most consequential one. International migration is expected to be the primary driver of population growth in 52 countries and territories through 2054, including Australia, Canada, and the United States. For nations with below-replacement fertility, immigration is essentially the mechanism keeping workforce size stable and economies functioning.
Migration is shaped by powerful push and pull factors. Push factors include unpleasant or life-threatening conditions that force people to leave – war, famine, economic collapse, environmental disasters – while pull factors make other places more attractive, such as better employment, education, security, or quality of life. As climate change intensifies droughts, floods, and food insecurity in vulnerable regions, climate-driven migration is expected to become an increasingly significant force reshaping population distribution in the decades ahead.
Resource pressures and the development challenge
The convergence of rapid population growth in the world’s poorest regions creates an acute development dilemma. The concentration of population growth in the poorest countries presents a considerable challenge to governments trying to implement the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development – particularly in areas of ending poverty and hunger, expanding health and education systems, achieving gender equality, and ensuring no one is left behind.
Food, water, energy, and urban infrastructure must scale rapidly in regions that already struggle to deliver them equitably. Between 26 African countries are projected to at least double in population between 2017 and 2050, meaning governments must essentially build – in under three decades – the equivalent of what currently exists in terms of cities, schools, hospitals, and transport networks. That is an extraordinary demand, particularly under fiscal constraints and climate stress.
Yet the picture is not uniformly bleak. Researchers from the Earth4All initiative argue that unprecedented investment in poverty alleviation, education, and health – particularly for women – could result in global population peaking as low as 8.5 billion by around 2040 before beginning to decline. Their analysis also challenges the notion that population size is the main driver of environmental strain, arguing instead that the extremely high material consumption of the world’s wealthiest 10% is a far greater pressure on planetary boundaries than population numbers in poorer nations.
Reading the demographic map ahead
The global population landscape of 2050 will look markedly different from today’s. Asia will remain the most populous continent but will be older and growing more slowly. Africa will be younger, faster-growing, and carrying an ever-larger share of humanity. Europe will be shrinking. And across the world, the interaction of fertility, mortality, and migration will continue to redraw the map – challenging policymakers, urban planners, and development practitioners to respond with both urgency and precision. The decisions made in the next two decades about education, healthcare, women’s empowerment, and climate adaptation will be the most powerful determinants of where humanity ends up by the century’s close.
