Every time you scroll through a social media feed, watch a YouTube video, or tap a notification on your phone, you are doing more than consuming content. You are participating in a complex system shaped by decades of theoretical thinking about media, technology, and society. The theories behind digital media may seem abstract, but they are the intellectual blueprints that explain why digital platforms work the way they do – and what they are doing to us. Let’s break down the most influential ones.

Marshall McLuhan: “The medium is the message”

If one thinker dominates conversations about media theory, it’s Marshall McLuhan. This Canadian philosopher, writing primarily in the 1960s, made a claim that still defines the field: “The medium is the message.” What he meant was direct – the technology used to deliver a message has a greater impact on society than the content of the message itself.

Consider the difference between reading a political speech as text in a newspaper and watching the same speech on television. The words are identical, but the experience is completely different. Television adds body language, tone, and visual cues. The medium – television – reshapes how you receive and interpret the message. McLuhan argued that every medium, from the printed book to the television, functions as an extension of our physical and nervous systems, amplifying certain human capabilities while diminishing others.

Hot and cold media

McLuhan also divided media into two types. Hot media (like print or radio) deliver a high volume of information in a structured way, requiring less participation from the audience. Cool media (like television or conversation) provide less information, demanding the audience fill in the gaps. This distinction matters for digital media: is a TikTok video “hot” because it delivers rapid-fire audiovisual content, or “cool” because its short format demands active scrolling and interpretation? McLuhan’s framework forces us to ask these questions rather than passively consume.

The global village

McLuhan also predicted what he called the “global village” – a world where electronic media would connect distant people into a single, shared community. He believed electronic media like television and eventually the internet would bring people from different parts of the world closer together, creating a sense of global community. Today, with social media enabling a protest in one country to be live-streamed worldwide, that prediction feels remarkably accurate. But McLuhan also recognised the global village wouldn’t be peaceful. When you compress the world’s diverse “tribes” into one digital space, conflicts, misinformation, and tribalism can intensify just as easily as empathy and understanding.

McLuhan’s thinking falls broadly under technological determinism – the idea that technology is the primary engine of social change. It’s a powerful lens, but not everyone accepted it. Enter a sharp critic.

Raymond Williams: The social shaping of technology

British cultural theorist Raymond Williams offered one of the strongest counter-arguments to McLuhan. In his influential 1974 book Television: Technology and Cultural Form, Williams directly challenged the notion that technology drives society from the outside. He argued instead that technology’s development and use are shaped by social, economic, and political contexts, not the other way around.

Williams outlined several key principles. First, technologies are social – they don’t emerge from a vacuum. Specific decisions are made about which inventions to develop, fund, and manufacture. Second, the forms and functions of technologies are not predetermined. When radio was in its early stages, for instance, one potential form was to function like a telephone. It was the political and economic environment – including lobbying by telephone companies – that shaped radio into a broadcast medium instead.

Why this matters for digital media

Williams’ framework, known as the Social Shaping of Technology (SST), is essential for understanding the internet. A technological determinist might say: “The internet was invented, and it made us more connected and more polarised.” A social shaping theorist would respond differently – the internet was invented, but existing social forces like capitalism, our desire for social connection, and political divisions shaped it into a tool for e-commerce, social media, and partisan news. It could have been something entirely different; after all, it started as a military and academic network.

This perspective is empowering. If society shapes technology, then society can reshape it. We aren’t helpless passengers on a technological train. Policy decisions, user movements, and cultural values all play a role in determining what digital media becomes. Williams helps us challenge the simplistic claim that “the internet changed our world” and instead understand how our world directed the internet’s evolution.

Jean Baudrillard: Simulation, hyperreality, and the loss of the real

If McLuhan and Williams debated whether technology or society holds the steering wheel, French philosopher Jean Baudrillard questioned whether there’s even a road. His 1981 work Simulacra and Simulation introduced a deeply unsettling idea: in modern media-saturated societies, the distinction between reality and representation has been eroded.

Baudrillard defined simulacra as copies that either had no original or whose original no longer exists. He argued that contemporary media – television, film, advertising, and now the internet – have replaced genuine reality with a constructed version he called hyperreality. In hyperreality, we interact with signs and symbols that refer only to other signs and symbols, not to anything “real.”

Four stages of the image

Baudrillard traced a progression in four stages. In the first, an image is a faithful representation of reality – like an unedited photo. In the second, the image distorts reality – like a retouched advertisement. In the third, the image masks the absence of reality – like a fire drill that simulates a danger that doesn’t exist. In the fourth and final stage, the image has no relationship to reality at all. It is pure simulacrum – a self-referential sign.

Baudrillard in the age of social media and AI

This theory has only grown more relevant. Baudrillard argued that communication technologies create a media world that exists parallel to reality, severing the traditional relationship between sign and meaning. Think about Instagram profiles that present curated, filtered versions of a person’s life. The “real” person behind the profile becomes secondary to the digital persona – the simulacrum. Or consider the rise of AI-generated images and deepfakes. Recent scholarship has connected Baudrillard’s simulation theory to the phenomenon of the “dead internet” – the idea that AI-generated content is increasingly replacing human-created material online, pushing genuine human expression to the margins. Baudrillard’s central warning – that we risk losing our grip on what is real – now feels less like philosophy and more like a news headline.

Actor-Network Theory: Humans and non-humans on equal footing

McLuhan focused on technology’s effects. Williams emphasised society’s role. Baudrillard questioned reality itself. But what if the answer isn’t “either/or” but a tangled web of both? This is the core proposition of Actor-Network Theory (ANT), developed primarily by French sociologist Bruno Latour, along with Michel Callon and John Law, beginning in the 1980s.

ANT makes a radical move: it treats humans and non-humans as equally important actors (or “actants”) within networks. A person is an actor. But so is a smartphone. So is an algorithm. So is a “Like” button. According to ANT, social outcomes emerge not from human decisions alone, nor from technology alone, but from the interactions between all these elements within a network.

Key concepts: Mediators and intermediaries

ANT distinguishes between two types of actants. Intermediaries are elements that pass through a network without changing it – like a cable that simply transmits data. Mediators are elements that actively transform, distort, or modify what passes through them. A social media algorithm, for example, is a powerful mediator. It doesn’t just deliver content; it selects, prioritises, and reshapes what you see, fundamentally altering your experience.

ANT and digital media

ANT is particularly useful for analysing digital ecosystems because these systems are inherently hybrid – they are built from code, hardware, human users, corporate policies, and cultural norms, all entangled together. ANT was developed as a response to both technological determinism and social determinism, arguing that separating the “social” from the “technical” is a false divide. When you post something on social media, the outcome isn’t determined purely by your intention (the social) or purely by the platform’s code (the technical). It’s produced by the interaction of both – and of dozens of other actants in the network, from your phone’s notification settings to the advertising model funding the platform.

This approach is powerful because it forces us to look at the entire system, not just the human or the technological parts of it. It makes visible the hidden actors – the algorithms, the design choices, the server architectures – that shape digital life in ways we rarely notice.

Postmodernity and digital culture

Many of these theories intersect with a broader intellectual movement: postmodernity. Postmodern thought, which gained prominence from the mid-20th century onwards, challenges the idea that there are universal truths, stable identities, or grand narratives that explain the world. Instead, postmodernism emphasises fragmentation, plurality, and the constructed nature of meaning.

Digital culture is often described as the ultimate expression of postmodernity. Online, identity is fluid – people maintain multiple profiles, adopt avatars, and curate different versions of themselves for different platforms. Truth is contested – misinformation and “fake news” circulate alongside verified reporting, and distinguishing between them is increasingly difficult. Grand narratives collapse into an endless scroll of short-form content, hot takes, and algorithmic recommendations.

Baudrillard’s hyperreality is a postmodern concept. So is the fragmentation of audiences that digital media enables – instead of a shared national broadcast, we each exist in personalised information bubbles. Postmodern theory provides the broader cultural and philosophical context within which digital media operates. It helps explain why the digital world feels unstable, why online debates so often spiral into relativism, and why the question “What is real?” has become so urgent.

Psychoanalysis and digital culture

The final theoretical lens might seem unexpected: psychoanalysis. The ideas of Sigmund Freud and, especially, French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan have been increasingly applied to understand our relationship with digital media. The question here shifts from “What does technology do to society?” to “Why do we respond to it so intensely?”

Lacan’s mirror stage and the digital self

Lacan’s concept of the mirror stage describes how an infant first recognises its own image in a mirror and forms an idealised sense of self. This became foundational for understanding how subjects construct identity through images. In the digital age, social media platforms act as a new kind of mirror. We craft profiles, post photos, and curate content that reflects an idealised version of ourselves. The gap between the messy reality of our lives and the polished digital image creates anxiety, desire, and a constant drive for validation – dynamics that Lacanian theory is well-equipped to analyse.

Desire, lack, and the infinite scroll

Lacan also theorised that desire is fundamentally driven by a sense of lack – we are always seeking something we can never fully obtain. Digital platforms are designed to exploit this. The infinite scroll, the notification ping, the promise of the next viral post – these are all structures that keep desire circulating without ever satisfying it. Scholars like Clint Burnham have used Slavoj ลฝiลพek’s combination of Lacanian psychoanalysis and Marxist materialism to argue that understanding digital culture requires examining how it taps into our unconscious drives, fantasies, and pathologies.

Psychoanalysis applied to digital culture reveals that our relationship with technology isn’t purely rational. It is deeply affective – shaped by unconscious desires, anxieties, and pleasures. This is why we check our phones compulsively, why we feel genuine distress at low engagement on a post, and why “doomscrolling” feels impossible to stop. The technology alone doesn’t explain these behaviours; the intersection of technology with the unconscious mind does.

How these theories work together

None of these theories exists in isolation. They form an interconnected toolkit. McLuhan tells us to pay attention to the medium itself, not just the message. Williams reminds us that society and power structures shape the technologies we build. Baudrillard warns us that media can erode our sense of what is real. Actor-Network Theory insists we look at the full network of human and non-human actors. Postmodernity provides the broader cultural context of fragmentation and contested meaning. And psychoanalysis reveals the unconscious drives that bind us to our screens.

Together, they offer a comprehensive framework for understanding digital media. They move us beyond simple questions like “Is social media good or bad?” toward more nuanced and productive inquiries: How does a platform’s design shape behaviour? Whose interests determined how this technology developed? Is the content I’m consuming a representation of reality or a simulation? What hidden actors are influencing my online experience? And what unconscious needs are my digital habits serving?
