For most of human history, power came from what you could physically control: land, factories, raw materials. Today, the most consequential resource is invisible. It’s a patent, a dataset, a piece of software, a professional certification. This shift – from an economy built on making things to one built on knowing things – is what scholars call the Knowledge Society or Information Society. But these aren’t just academic buzzwords. They describe a fundamentally different set of rules governing who holds power, who creates wealth, and who gets left behind. A handful of influential thinkers – Daniel Bell, Manuel Castells, Scott Lash, Peter Drucker, and Bob Jessop – have spent decades mapping this new world. Their ideas, taken together, form the most complete picture we have of the society we already live in.

Daniel Bell’s vision: the sociologist who saw it coming

The intellectual foundation of the information society concept was laid by American sociologist Daniel Bell. In his landmark 1973 work, The Coming of Post-Industrial Society, Bell argued that advanced economies were undergoing a fundamental structural transformation. Industrial society was built on manufacturing, physical labor, and the ownership of capital. The post-industrial society Bell forecast would be built on something entirely different: theoretical knowledge.

Bell was precise about this distinction. He differentiated between three things: raw data (facts about the world), information (data organized into meaningful patterns), and knowledge (the application of information to make judgments and decisions). In his view, it was this last category – codified, systematic, theoretical knowledge – that would become the central engine of the new economy.

This shift had direct social consequences. Bell contended that the rise of new elites based on skill derived from the fact that knowledge and planning had become the basic requisites for all organized action in modern society. In practical terms, this meant that scientists, engineers, academics, and technical professionals would rise to prominence, replacing the industrial capitalist and the factory foreman as the central figures of social authority. Professional and technical groups would become the new power class, not because they owned factories, but because they owned expertise.

Perhaps Bell’s most enduring insight was about the commodification of information. He foresaw that information would stop being a free-flowing public good and would instead be treated as a product – packaged, priced, bought, and sold. A market research report, a patented drug formula, a proprietary algorithm: these are all concrete expressions of what Bell was describing in 1973. His forecast has proven remarkably accurate. The highest-valued companies in the world today – from pharmaceutical giants to technology firms – are fundamentally in the business of owning and selling information.

Manuel Castells and the “informational” society

Several decades after Bell, Spanish sociologist Manuel Castells updated and deepened this analysis. Castells deliberately chose the term “informational society” rather than “information society,” and the distinction matters enormously. In his three-volume series The Information Age: Economy, Society and Culture (1996-1998), Castells argued that societies have always used information – a Roman general needed good intelligence, a medieval merchant needed trade data. What makes the current era distinctive isn’t information itself, but the fact that the generation and transformation of information has become the fundamental source of productivity and power.

For Castells, this new system – which he calls “informationalism” – is characterized by the processing of knowledge and information through technologies, with networks constituting the pivotal organizational logic of society. The economy isn’t just using information as a tool; it is restructured around information flows. Production, management, distribution, and power are all organized through networks of electronically processed data.

This brings Castells to his concept of the Network Society. Castells defines this as a society where the key social structures and activities are organized around electronically processed information networks. It’s not just about computers being everywhere. It’s about the logic of networks – decentralized, open-ended, and globally connected – reshaping how economies function and how power is distributed. Those who are well-positioned within these networks accumulate resources and influence. Those who are excluded from them are structurally marginalized, a point Castells describes with the stark phrase “landscapes of despair.”

Castells also observed a profound change in the workforce. He found that while the networked knowledge worker may seek work globally, the majority of workers are still geographically confined, and informationalism has led to a structural change characterized by instability – part-time and temporary employment becoming the norm. The network society creates winners at the top of the information hierarchy and a large, precarious mass of service workers below them.

Power in the information age: Scott Lash and intellectual property

If Bell identified the rise of knowledge as a commodity and Castells mapped the networks through which it flows, sociologist Scott Lash zoomed in on the precise mechanics of power in this new order. His central argument, developed in Critique of Information (2002), is that information is power – and that the primary form of power in an information society is the ownership of intellectual property.

In the industrial age, power came from owning a steel mill or a railway. Today, it comes from owning a patent, a copyright, a brand, or proprietary source code. A pharmaceutical company’s dominance isn’t just in its research laboratories; it’s in the exclusive rights granted by a patent that allows it to be the sole seller of a life-saving drug for decades. A software company’s value isn’t in its office buildings; it’s in the copyright over its operating system.

This reframing of power has profound implications for inequality. Lash argued that knowledge societies are characterized by uncertainty and rapid change, and that traditional authorities lose their legitimacy when information can quickly reveal their limitations. More critically, the defining social divide is no longer simply between economic classes defined by their relationship to industrial production (owners versus workers). It is increasingly between those who are inside the information networks – with access, skills, and credentials – and those who are excluded from them. The new inequality is an inequality of exclusion. Without access to the internet, without the education to decode technical information, and without the resources to acquire intellectual credentials, individuals and entire communities are locked out of the new economy entirely.

The rise of the knowledge worker

One of the most concrete and consequential features of the knowledge society is the type of worker it produces and depends upon. Management theorist Peter Drucker coined the term “knowledge worker” around 1960 and spent decades analyzing what this new class meant for society and organizations. In his 1993 book Post-Capitalist Society, Drucker made a bold claim: knowledge had replaced labor and capital as the primary factor of production.

According to Drucker, by the mid-20th century, the factors of production were no longer primarily labor or capital, but knowledge. Value is created through “productivity” and “innovation” – both applications of knowledge to work. The leading social group of the emerging society, in his view, would be knowledge workers – people who know how to allocate knowledge to productive use. Unlike the industrial worker, the knowledge worker carries the most valuable means of production in their own head. A software engineer, a doctor, a financial analyst, or a data scientist can take their expertise to any employer; the knowledge belongs to them, not to the factory floor.

Drucker identified knowledge workers as the new class structure of a post-capitalist society, divided between knowledge workers and service workers, replacing the older capitalist-proletariat divide. This has enormous implications for education, labor markets, and organizational design. If knowledge is the key input, then continuous learning becomes an economic necessity, not a personal preference. The university degree, the professional certification, and the technical skill set are no longer just personal achievements; they are an individual’s primary economic asset.

Bob Jessop: knowledge as a commodity and capitalist control

Political economist Bob Jessop provides perhaps the most critical angle on the knowledge society by asking a pointed question: how does knowledge – which is often generated collectively through scientific communities, educational institutions, and public research – end up as private property? His answer reveals a key tension at the heart of the information age.

Jessop explains that knowledge, which begins as a collective resource, gets progressively captured and transformed into intellectual property within a capitalist system. This process of commodification operates on two levels. First, in the labour market: your university degree, your professional certifications, and your specialized skills are forms of knowledge that you sell to an employer. You’re not simply trading time; you’re trading what you know. Second, as property: a company can legally “own” a piece of knowledge through patents and copyrights, creating the conditions for monopoly control. As the Cambridge analysis of intellectual property and economic inequality notes, the very reason to grant monopolies and exclusive rights over information is to foster investment in creating it – but this system also entrenches inequality by concentrating the ownership of valuable knowledge in the hands of a few.

Jessop’s contribution is to show that the knowledge society is not a neutral, post-ideological utopia of shared information. It is a site of new capitalist dynamics, where the struggle over who can own, control, and profit from knowledge is as fundamental as the older struggle over who owns the means of industrial production. The transformation of knowledge from a public good into a private commodity creates new possibilities for monopoly – from dominant tech platforms owning proprietary AI models to pharmaceutical corporations controlling essential drug patents.

Distinctive features of a knowledge society

Synthesizing the frameworks of Bell, Castells, Lash, Drucker, and Jessop, several core features define what we mean by a knowledge or information society.

The axial role of knowledge generation: The production and deployment of knowledge – scientific, technical, and data-driven – is the central organizing principle of the economy. It replaces physical labor and accumulated capital as the primary driver of growth and social organization. Innovation, not manufacturing output, is the measure of an economy’s vitality.

The prominence of scientific and professional groups: Scientists, engineers, doctors, lawyers, programmers, and analysts – Bell’s “professional-scientific-technical caste” – become the most influential and economically rewarded class in society. Their expertise guides both innovation and policy, giving them a form of social authority that manual labor never commanded.

Society structured around information networks: As Castells argued, the organizing logic of the information society is the network. Those with a better strategic position in the network, as well as stronger attributes like financial resources, education, and information skills, continuously reconfigure the network to promote their own interests. Telecommunications infrastructure and the internet are not just tools; they are the social skeleton of this new order.

Knowledge treated as a commodity: Information is not simply shared freely; it is packaged, priced, patented, and copyrighted. Personal data, market research, proprietary algorithms, and pharmaceutical formulas are all traded as economic goods. This commodification creates new forms of market power and new sources of profit.

Inequality defined by knowledge exclusion: The deepest social division in a knowledge society is not simply between rich and poor in the traditional sense. It is between those with access to information networks, the education to use them, and the credentials to participate in the knowledge economy – and those without. The growing ability of digital systems to customise information and empower specific users only tightens certain groups’ control and increases the digital divide within the information society. This is the defining inequality of our era, and it operates globally: nations without adequate digital infrastructure risk being excluded from the knowledge economy altogether, just as individuals without education and connectivity are excluded domestically.

Why this framework still matters

The theories discussed here were developed between the 1960s and early 2000s, but their relevance has only grown. The rise of generative AI, the consolidation of data ownership among a handful of technology corporations, the global battles over pharmaceutical patents during health crises, and the political fights over net neutrality and digital access – all of these are direct expressions of the dynamics that Bell, Castells, Lash, Drucker, and Jessop were mapping. Understanding that we live in an information society isn’t just an academic exercise. It explains why certain skills command enormous salaries while others are automated away, why platform companies wield unprecedented economic and political power, and why the UNESCO and International Telecommunications Union treat the digital divide as a development emergency on par with access to clean water and healthcare.

The central insight across all these frameworks is consistent: in a knowledge society, what you know – and whether you have the access and credentials to use that knowledge – determines your position in the social and economic order more decisively than any other single factor.
