What is digital art?
At its core, digital art refers to any artistic work created, modified, or presented using digital technology. A brief history of digital art
Digital art didn’t appear overnight. Its roots stretch back to the 1950s and 1960s, when computers were room-sized machines confined to universities and corporate laboratories. Artists who wanted to work with these new technologies had to collaborate directly with mathematicians and engineers.
The early pioneers (1950s-1970s)
The earliest recognised digital artwork in the Victoria and Albert Museum’s collection is Oscillon 40 (1952), created by American mathematician Ben Laposky. He used an oscilloscope – a device typically found in engineering and medicine – to manipulate electronic signals and photograph them as wave-shaped patterns. Film studios, game developers, and advertising agencies use Photoshop and similar tools to construct virtual scenes that look indistinguishable from real locations. The latest versions of Photoshop have integrated AI-powered features – such as Generative Fill powered by Adobe’s Firefly models – that can generate realistic content based on text prompts, automatically matching shadows, reflections, lighting, and perspective to the existing image.
