Photo editing didn’t start with Instagram filters or Photoshop layers. It began in dimly lit darkrooms, with chemicals, brushes, and razor blades. From the earliest days of photography in the 19th century, people have been altering images – sometimes for artistic reasons, sometimes for far more sinister purposes. The history of photo editing is a journey through art, propaganda, technology, and the very idea of what we consider “real.” Let’s trace that journey, from hand-painted portraits to AI-powered tools.

The darkroom era: where photo editing began

The story of photo editing starts the moment photography itself was born. Darkrooms have been in use since the early 19th century, serving as the only space where photographers could develop their images. These were rooms sealed from all outside light, illuminated only by dim red or amber safelights that wouldn’t expose the light-sensitive paper.

Inside the darkroom, photographers had surprising control over the final image. Two core techniques – dodging and burning – allowed them to manipulate how much light hit different areas of the photographic paper during the printing process. Dodging meant selectively blocking light from certain areas to make them lighter, while burning involved giving extra exposure to specific parts to make them darker. These weren’t gimmicks; they were essential skills for creating well-balanced prints with visible detail in both highlights and shadows.

The process was painstaking. Photographers would make test strips, evaluate results, then go back to adjust their dodging and burning patterns – sometimes repeating the cycle dozens of times to get a single print right. There was no “undo” button. A mistake meant starting the entire process over again.

Hand colouring and early retouching

Before colour film existed, photographers used actual paint, ink, and dyes to add colour to their monochrome prints by hand. This was standard practice in portrait photography throughout the late 1800s and early 1900s. Skilled hand colourists would use fine brushes and translucent oils or watercolours to tint cheeks, clothing, and backgrounds. The results sat somewhere between a photograph and a painting – part documentation, part artistic interpretation.

Physical retouching also became common. Airbrushes were used to smooth skin, remove blemishes, and even alter facial features. Retouchers would work directly on negatives with fine-tipped tools, scraping and painting the emulsion layer. It was delicate, skilled labour that could take hours for a single image.

Combination printing: the first composites

One of the earliest forms of photo manipulation was combination printing, developed in the mid-19th century. Photographers like Gustave Le Gray faced a technical limitation: the photographic materials of the day couldn’t properly expose both a bright sky and a darker landscape in a single shot. Le Gray’s solution was to take two separate exposures – one for the sky, one for the sea or land – and physically combine the negatives during printing to create a seamless final image.

Another pioneer, Oscar Gustave Rejlander, took this even further. In 1857, he created “The Two Ways of Life,” a massive composite image made from over 30 different negatives. These early composite techniques were the direct ancestors of modern-day Photoshop layers.

Photo manipulation as a political weapon

The moment photographs became accepted as evidence of “truth,” powerful people began manipulating them to shape reality. And no one did this more systematically than Joseph Stalin.

Stalin’s photo propaganda machine

In the Soviet Union under Stalin’s rule (1929-1953), photo manipulation became a tool for rewriting history itself. When political figures fell out of favour – which happened constantly during the Great Purge – they weren’t just removed from power. They were erased from every photograph they had ever appeared in.

The most famous example involves Nikolai Yezhov, the head of Stalin’s secret police who oversaw the execution of hundreds of thousands of Soviet citizens. After Yezhov himself was arrested and executed, he was neatly removed from a well-known photograph showing him standing beside Stalin along the Moscow Canal. Soviet retouchers replaced him with an extended section of the canal’s embankment, as if he had never existed.

Leon Trotsky, once a central figure in the Russian Revolution and Lenin’s close ally, suffered the same fate. After being exiled by Stalin, Trotsky was systematically removed from all official photographs – including a famous 1920 image where he stood near Lenin during a speech at the Bolshoi Theater. In the altered version, the space where Trotsky stood was simply painted over.

Stalin’s regime also used photo manipulation to enhance his own image. Retouchers would smooth out his pockmarked skin, lengthen his left arm (which was shorter due to a childhood injury), and even fabricate photographs of him sitting beside Lenin to suggest a close friendship that, in reality, never existed. As historian David King documented in his book The Commissar Vanishes, this manipulation operated on an ad hoc basis – quiet instructions from higher authorities were enough to erase a person from the visual record entirely.

John Heartfield’s photomontage against Nazi propaganda

While Stalin used photo manipulation to suppress the truth, a German artist named John Heartfield (born Helmut Herzfeld) used it to expose lies. Heartfield is widely regarded as a pioneer of political photomontage – the technique of cutting and combining different photographs to create entirely new, often satirical images.

Working primarily for the left-wing magazine Arbeiter-Illustrierte-Zeitung (AIZ) from 1929 to 1938, Heartfield created biting visual critiques of Hitler and the Nazi regime. His photomontages were published on the cover of AIZ, which at its peak had a circulation of around 500,000 copies, rivalling any other German magazine of the era. His images were also reproduced as posters and distributed on the streets of Berlin.

One of his most iconic works, Adolf, the Superman: Swallows Gold and Spouts Junk (1932), depicted Hitler with an X-ray view of his torso showing gold coins flowing down his throat – a sharp commentary on the financial backers behind the Nazi party. Another famous piece, Hurrah, die Butter ist Alle! (1935), showed a German family attempting to eat machine parts, a bicycle, and an axe at their dinner table, mocking Hermann Gรถring’s statement that iron production mattered more than food.

Heartfield’s work was so effective that the Nazis placed him on the Gestapo’s most wanted list. He was badly beaten by Hitler supporters on more than one occasion and had to flee Germany in 1933 when the SS raided his apartment. He continued his anti-fascist art from exile in Prague and later London.

Heartfield’s legacy matters because he demonstrated that photo manipulation could serve as a form of resistance, not just control. He turned the tools of mass media against the very powers that sought to dominate it.

The digital revolution: enter Adobe Photoshop

For most of the 20th century, photo editing remained a specialised craft requiring expensive equipment, chemicals, and significant technical skill. Then, in the late 1980s, two brothers changed everything.

How two brothers created Photoshop

Thomas Knoll, a PhD student at the University of Michigan, began writing a program in 1987 to display grayscale images on his Macintosh Plus. His brother John, who worked at Industrial Light & Magic (the visual effects company behind Star Wars), saw the program’s potential and encouraged Thomas to develop it into a full image editor.

Thomas initially called the program “Display,” then “ImagePro” (the name was taken), and finally Photoshop. The brothers shopped it around to several software companies, most of which showed little interest. Adobe Systems agreed to license the software in September 1988, and Photoshop 1.0 was officially released in February 1990 for the Macintosh.

The impact was immediate. Before Photoshop, professional-grade digital retouching on dedicated systems like the Scitex workstation cost around $300 per hour. Photoshop 1.0 retailed for $895 – a one-time purchase that gave anyone with a Mac access to tools that had previously been restricted to high-end studios. By 1993, a Windows version expanded its reach even further. In 1995, Adobe purchased the full rights to Photoshop from the Knoll brothers for $34.5 million.

From darkroom tools to digital equivalents

What made Photoshop so transformative was that it digitised the very techniques photographers had been using in darkrooms for over a century. Dodging and burning became tools you could paint with using a mouse. Retouching was handled by the Clone Stamp and later the Healing Brush, which could copy pixels from one area to cover imperfections in another. Combination printing evolved into the Layers system – introduced in Photoshop 3.0 in 1994 – which allowed users to stack multiple images on transparent sheets that could be manipulated independently.

Each new version introduced features that pushed the boundaries of what was possible. Photoshop 4.0 (1996) brought Adjustment Layers and Actions for automation. Photoshop 7.0 (2002) introduced the Healing Brush for seamless retouching. In 2003, Adobe bundled Photoshop into its Creative Suite, and by 2013, it had moved to the subscription-based Creative Cloud model, making it accessible for a monthly fee rather than a large upfront cost.

The democratisation of photo editing

Photoshop cracked open the door, but the real democratisation of photo editing came with smartphones and free apps. What was once a multi-step, highly technical process became something anyone could do in seconds.

Mobile editing and social media filters

When Instagram launched in 2010, it came with a set of built-in filters that could transform the look of any photo with a single tap. Those filters were essentially pre-packaged sets of editing commands – adjusting contrast, shifting colour tones, adding grain – that replicated the aesthetic of old film stocks. Suddenly, millions of people who had never heard of dodging or burning were performing their own version of photo editing every day.

Apps like Snapseed (acquired by Google), VSCO, and Lightroom Mobile brought increasingly sophisticated controls to the smartphone. Sliders for brightness, saturation, shadows, and highlights gave casual users the same kind of control that photographers once spent hours achieving in darkrooms.

Free and open-source alternatives

The rise of free editing software like GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program), Pixlr, and Canva further lowered the barriers. Users no longer needed to pay for expensive software to perform professional-level edits. Open-source RAW processing tools like darktable and RawTherapee gave hobbyist photographers the ability to develop digital images with the same precision as professional suites.

AI and the future of photo editing

The latest chapter in this history is being written by artificial intelligence. AI-powered tools have moved far beyond simple filters and adjustments. They can now understand the content of an image and make intelligent decisions about how to alter it.

Adobe’s Generative Fill, introduced in Photoshop in 2023, allows users to select an area of a photo and describe in text what they want to appear there. The AI then generates new pixels – objects, backgrounds, or extensions of existing scenes – that blend seamlessly with the original image. You can remove a person from a crowded beach, extend a landscape beyond its original frame, or add elements that were never photographed in the first place.

Other tools like neural filters can change facial expressions, adjust apparent age, transfer artistic styles, and even colourize black-and-white photos with remarkable accuracy. Smartphone cameras now use AI processing in real time – performing noise reduction, HDR blending, and skin smoothing the moment you press the shutter button, before you even open an editing app.

The ethical question

This brings us full circle. Stalin’s retouchers spent hours with airbrushes and scalpels to erase a single person from a photo. Today, anyone with a smartphone can achieve the same result in seconds. The tools have become infinitely more powerful and accessible, but the fundamental ethical questions remain the same: When does editing become deception? Who controls the image, and who controls reality?

The rise of deepfakes and AI-generated imagery has made these questions more urgent than ever. News organisations, governments, and tech companies are now grappling with how to verify the authenticity of visual media in an era where convincing fakes can be produced almost instantly. Tools like Content Credentials (supported by Adobe and others through the Content Authenticity Initiative) aim to embed metadata into images that tracks their editing history – a kind of digital chain of custody.

Key milestones in the history of photo editing

Here’s a quick timeline of the most important moments in the evolution of photo editing: the 1860s saw the first known case of political photo manipulation when an artist composited Abraham Lincoln’s head onto another person’s body. In the 1920s-1930s, Stalin’s regime systematised the practice of erasing political opponents from photographs. Around the same time, John Heartfield pioneered photomontage as anti-fascist resistance art. In 1987, Thomas Knoll began developing the program that would become Photoshop. The software was commercially released in 1990 and introduced layers in 1994. The 2010s saw mobile editing go mainstream with Instagram and smartphone apps. And in the 2020s, AI-powered tools like Generative Fill began blurring the line between photography and digital creation entirely.

Why this history matters for media professionals

Understanding the history of photo editing isn’t just academic – it’s essential for anyone working in journalism, media, or communication. Every photograph you encounter has been shaped by choices: what to include, what to remove, what to enhance. These choices carry ethical weight.

The tools have changed dramatically – from paintbrushes and darkroom chemicals to neural networks and generative AI. But the core tension remains the same. A photograph can inform, inspire, and illuminate. It can also mislead, manipulate, and erase. Knowing this history helps media professionals make more responsible choices about how they create, edit, and share visual content.
