What is photo editing?

It’s a common misconception that photo editing began with computers. In reality, photographers have been manipulating their images almost since photography was invented. Darkroom manipulation – the practice of altering photographs using physical and chemical techniques – dates back to the 1860s. One of the earliest known examples involved attaching Abraham Lincoln’s head onto the body of another politician, John C. Calhoun, to create a more heroic-looking portrait.

Physical retouching was the most painstaking technique. Editors worked directly on the film negative or the printed photograph using pencils, dyes, tiny brushes, and even small blades. They could smooth skin, remove dust spots, or paint in missing details. This was the original “airbrushing,” and a single retouched print could take hours to perfect.
Other creative techniques included toning, which changed the overall colour of a black-and-white print to sepia, blue, or other shades; solarization, which created surreal, partially reversed images; and even combination printing, where multiple negatives were merged to create one final composite image. Photographer Jerry Uelsmann, for instance, was famous for using up to twelve enlargers simultaneously to create surreal composites entirely in the darkroom, long before digital tools existed.
The shift to digital photo editing
The invention of digital cameras and personal computers transformed photo editing completely. What once required a physical darkroom, chemical knowledge, and hours of manual labour could now be done on a computer screen with far greater precision and flexibility. The launch of Adobe Photoshop in 1990 was a landmark moment, giving photographers a software-based toolkit that could replicate – and vastly expand upon – every traditional darkroom technique.

The digital photo editing workflow
In professional and serious amateur photography, photo editing isn’t random – it follows a structured workflow. A well-organised editing workflow ensures consistent results and avoids destructive mistakes. While the specific tools differ between software, the general sequence of steps is fairly universal.
Import and organise
The process begins with transferring images from the camera’s memory card to a computer. Photographers typically use software like Adobe Lightroom to import, organise, and tag their images. This is also the stage for culling – reviewing all the shots and selecting only the strongest images for further editing. A professional might take hundreds of photos at a session but only edit a carefully curated selection.

A photo destined for print requires different settings (higher resolution, specific colour profiles) than one intended for a website or social media (lower file size, sRGB colour space). Output sharpening – a final round of sharpening tailored to the specific output medium – is typically the last adjustment applied.
Why RAW format matters
One of the most important decisions in the digital editing workflow happens before any editing begins: the choice of file format. Most serious photographers shoot in RAW format rather than JPEG. A RAW file contains all the unprocessed data captured by the camera’s sensor – it’s often described as a “digital negative.” Unlike JPEG, which compresses and discards data permanently, RAW preserves the full dynamic range and colour information of the scene.
This matters enormously for editing. RAW files offer far greater flexibility when adjusting exposure, recovering blown highlights or lost shadows, and correcting white balance. A JPEG might produce visible banding or noise when you push the exposure slider too far, but a RAW file can handle significant adjustments gracefully. RAW editing is also non-destructive – the original data is never altered, and every change can be reversed or modified at any time.
The trade-off is that RAW files are significantly larger than JPEGs and require dedicated software (like Lightroom or Capture One) for processing. They also require an extra step in the workflow, since RAW files must be converted to a standard format like JPEG or TIFF before they can be shared or printed. There’s sometimes a perception that editing is “cheating” – that a good photographer should get everything right in the camera. But the history of the medium tells a different story. In the digital era, editing is simply part of the complete photographic process. A camera sensor, no matter how advanced, captures data – it doesn’t automatically produce a finished photograph that matches what the human eye perceived. White balance needs correction. Dynamic range needs balancing. Distractions need removal. Editing is where the photographer’s vision is fully realised.
