Pick up a printed newspaper and compare it to scrolling through a news app. The newspaper is static – once printed, it’s fixed. The app, however, updates in real time, plays videos, links to related stories, and lets you comment within seconds. That gap isn’t just a difference in format. It reflects something deeper: digital media operates on a fundamentally different set of principles. Scholars and media professionals have identified five core characteristics that define it – interactivity, convergence, immediacy, archiving, and linkages. Understanding these five pillars explains why digital media behaves the way it does, and why it has so radically transformed how the world communicates.

Interactivity: from passive audiences to active participants
Traditional media – print, radio, television – was largely a one-way street. A broadcaster spoke; audiences listened. Digital media changed that equation entirely. Unlike its predecessors, digital media enables a two-way flow of communication, turning audiences into participants rather than passive receivers.
This shift is visible everywhere. On social media platforms, users don’t just read – they like, share, comment, and remix. On news websites, readers respond to journalists in real time. YouTube creators receive instant feedback from viewers who then produce their own response videos. Media scholars describe this as the rise of the “produser” – someone who is simultaneously a producer and a consumer of content. The introduction of Web 2.0 around 2004 was a turning point, allowing users to create and share their own content on platforms like Wikipedia and early social networks, cementing interactivity as a defining feature of digital life.
Why interactivity matters
Interactivity doesn’t just change how content is consumed – it changes how it’s made. News organisations increasingly shape stories based on what their audiences engage with. Researchers studying Latin American digital newsrooms found that interactive formats generate significantly more audience participation than static content. In one case study from Chile, newsrooms that deployed active calls-to-action saw far higher comment volumes than those with minimal interaction cues. But interactivity also introduces accountability: when audiences can respond, errors are challenged faster, and misinformation is called out more quickly.
Convergence: one screen, many media
Not long ago, you needed separate devices for different media – a radio for music, a television for news, a telephone for calls, and a newspaper for the morning’s headlines. Convergence collapsed all of that into a single device. Media convergence refers to the blending of previously distinct media sources and technologies, largely driven by advancements in digital technology and the Internet, unifying platforms that once operated in separate silos.
The smartphone is the most obvious example. It is simultaneously a broadcast device, a print platform, a music player, an internet browser, and a camera – all in one pocket-sized screen. Smartphones blend print media like e-books and news apps, broadcast media like radio and music apps, and internet connectivity into a single converged device. This has profound implications for storytelling. News organisations no longer just publish articles; they create multimedia packages combining written text, video interviews, interactive graphics, audio clips, and social media embeds within a single story.
Convergence at the industry level
Convergence isn’t only technological – it’s economic and organisational. Media scholar Henry Jenkins defines convergence as “the flow of content across multiple media platforms, the cooperation between multiple media industries, and the migratory behaviour of media audiences” who seek their preferred content across channels. A news company today cannot survive as only a “print” outlet – it must also operate as a video producer, podcast network, and social media presence simultaneously. One of the perceived benefits of this convergence is that companies can share content across platforms with minimal additional cost – an article published in print can instantly appear online without the expense of ink, paper, or printing infrastructure.
Immediacy: the real-time news environment
Before digital media, news operated on fixed schedules. The morning newspaper carried yesterday’s events. The evening broadcast reported what happened that afternoon. Today, that gap has shrunk to nearly zero. Immediacy, accessibility, ease of use, and convenience are now defining features of technology-mediated communication, and this has fundamentally restructured the relationship between events and public knowledge.
Live streaming services illustrate this vividly. When something newsworthy occurs, witnesses can broadcast directly from their phones to a global audience in seconds – no editor, no delay, no production process. The pace of digital news is fast and stories are continually updated. A published digital article is not a finished product – it can be revised with corrections, new developments, or updated data at any time, making it a living document rather than a static snapshot.
The cost of speed
Immediacy has a significant downside. The pressure to be “first” in reporting can sometimes override the pressure to be accurate, contributing to the rapid spread of misinformation and unverified rumours. When breaking news breaks fast, fact-checking often breaks down. This places a heavy responsibility on both content creators – to verify before publishing – and on audiences – to think critically before sharing. Immediacy amplifies reach; it also amplifies error.
Archiving: the digital world’s long memory
Traditional media was largely ephemeral. A radio broadcast vanished once aired. A newspaper yellowed and was thrown away. Digital media is fundamentally different: by its very nature, digital content is stored, indexed, and retrievable. Every article, video, tweet, and podcast episode is captured in a database, creating what is effectively a vast, searchable record of human communication.
Digital archiving is the systematic process of preserving and organising digital data for long-term access and retrieval, and it has transformed how journalism, research, and public memory function. The Internet Archive, founded in 1996, has become the recognised industry leader in digital preservation and maintains the Wayback Machine, a tool widely used by researchers and journalists to access past versions of websites and deleted content. Thanks to search engines like Google, a specific piece of information can be retrieved from billions of documents in moments – something impossible with physical archives.
The “long tail” and the digital footprint
Archiving produces two interesting effects. For content creators, it creates what economists call the “long tail” – older content continues to be discovered and consumed years after publication, giving it a much longer commercial and informational life. For individuals, it creates a digital footprint: a semi-permanent record of public posts, comments, and online activity that can resurface long after it was created. Data journalism stories, in particular, face the risk of “link rot” – where URLs become broken and stories disappear from the web – underscoring the fact that archiving is an active responsibility, not just a passive by-product of going digital.
Linkages: the connective tissue of the web
If archiving is digital media’s memory, linkages are its connective tissue. The entire World Wide Web is built on one foundational idea: hypertext. A hyperlink connects one piece of content to another, enabling non-linear navigation through information. Reading a printed book is linear – you go from page 1 to page 2 to page 3. Reading a digital article is non-linear – you might follow a link to a source document, then to a background article, then to a data set, all within minutes, building a personalised understanding of the topic.
In journalism specifically, hyperlinks allow journalists to break complex stories into non-linear narratives, with links to important sub-stories and background information. Readers already familiar with certain context can skip over it; readers who want depth can follow the breadcrumbs as far as they choose. Hyperlinks imbue a news story with the power of the World Wide Web, allowing writers to source information, explain detail, and provide depth in ways unique to the medium.
Linkages as transparency and credibility
Beyond navigation, linkages serve a journalistic function: in digital journalism, links are understood as expanding news stories with background and sources, signalling transparency of method, and ideally inspiring trust. When a journalist links directly to a government document, a scientific study, or an eyewitness account, they are not just directing readers – they are being accountable. Hyperlinks provide journalism with the means to be more in-depth and more transparent, arguably improving journalistic quality and credibility. Research also indicates that people spend more time reading, and learn more, when links are present in a story – a strong case for treating linkage as a core editorial practice, not an afterthought.
How the five pillars work together
These five characteristics don’t operate in isolation. They interact and reinforce each other constantly. Consider a live-streamed protest: the stream itself is immediate; the video feed combined with a running text chat is convergence in action; viewers posting comments that the streamer reads aloud is interactivity; the recorded stream stored on a platform and searchable later is archiving; and the description box filled with links to related campaigns and sources is linkages. Strip out any one of these five elements and the experience collapses. Together, they define what makes digital media categorically different from anything that came before.
For media professionals, understanding these pillars isn’t academic – it’s operational. A journalist who grasps interactivity builds audience trust through engagement. One who understands convergence crafts multimedia stories that reach wider audiences. One who respects immediacy verifies before publishing. One who thinks about archiving publishes with longevity in mind. And one who uses linkages well makes their reporting more credible and more useful.
