Television is one of the most transformative inventions in human history – a technology that didn’t just change how people spend their evenings, but fundamentally reshaped politics, culture, education, and national identity. Yet its origins were messy, contested, and spread across continents. From a Utah farm boy’s flash of inspiration to a government experiment in Delhi, the story of television is as dramatic as anything it has ever broadcast.

The pre-electronic era: mechanical beginnings
Before the television as we know it existed, inventors were already chasing the dream of transmitting moving images. The conceptual groundwork was laid as far back as 1884, when German scientist Paul Nipkow demonstrated the first electromechanical transmission of pictures using a spinning perforated disk – an invention that became the basis of early mechanical television systems. The first electromechanical transmission of a silhouette image was demonstrated by Charles Francis Jenkins in the United States in 1925, while in England, John Logie Baird produced a discernible image of a human face using an electromechanical system in 1926.
Baird, a Scottish inventor, is credited with giving the world’s first public demonstration of true television images in January 1926 before 50 scientists in central London. He then formed the Baird Television Development Company, and in 1928 achieved the first transatlantic television transmission between London and New York. Baird is also credited with demonstrating both colour and stereoscopic television that same year. His system, however, relied on Nipkow’s spinning disk – a fundamentally mechanical design that would soon be overtaken by a purely electronic approach.
Meanwhile, in Russia, Boris Rosing had been quietly exploring an alternative path. In America, Vladimir Zworykin – a Russian émigré who had studied under Boris Rosing – and Philo Farnsworth were struggling with all-electronic systems of television. Rosing’s use of cathode ray tubes as a display device, though primitive, planted the seed for the fully electronic television that would eventually prevail.
Farnsworth and the birth of electronic television
The most pivotal breakthrough in television history belongs to Philo Taylor Farnsworth, a young American inventor from a farming family in Utah. As a teenager ploughing his father’s fields, he had an insight: an electron beam could scan images in horizontal lines, just as he was moving back and forth across the field. On September 7, 1927, he transmitted the first all-electronic television image – a straight line – using his newly developed camera vacuum tube, known as the image dissector.
Farnsworth had built the world’s first working all-electronic television system, employing electronic scanning in both the pickup and display devices. He first demonstrated his system to the press on September 3, 1928, and to the public at the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia on August 25, 1934. His achievement was remarkable not just technically, but also because it was accomplished with minimal resources and outside the corporate research labs that dominated the field.
The RCA battle and patent wars
Farnsworth’s success attracted powerful opposition. RCA (Radio Corporation of America), the country’s dominant communications company, had hired Russian-American engineer Vladimir Zworykin to lead its television development. Zworykin visited Farnsworth’s laboratory and was sufficiently impressed; RCA, on the basis of Zworykin’s 1923 patent application, filed a patent interference suit against Farnsworth. The legal battle was long and expensive. Ultimately, the U.S. Patent Office ruled in favour of Farnsworth in 1934, and RCA was eventually forced to pay Farnsworth $1 million in licensing fees – a historic reversal that validated the independent inventor over the corporate giant. Despite this legal victory, Farnsworth died in debt in 1971, having never profited significantly from his invention.
Television takes root in the United States
Although the BBC in Britain had begun the world’s first regular television broadcasts in 1936, it was RCA’s marketing muscle that introduced the American public to television in a grand way. RCA sponsored a Hall of Television at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, and NBC broadcast the fair’s opening ceremonies – making Franklin D. Roosevelt the first president to appear on television.
The outbreak of World War II stalled television’s growth – set production halted entirely. But once the war ended, the medium exploded. By 1948, almost one million American homes had televisions, and there were 108 licensed television stations across the country. The 1950s became known as the “Golden Age” of American television, with programming migrating from radio: variety shows, westerns, quiz programs, and situation comedies all drew enormous audiences.
McCarthyism and television’s political power
Television’s reach made it a potent political instrument almost from the start. The most dramatic early example was the clash between broadcast journalism and Senator Joseph McCarthy, whose anti-communist crusade gripped America in the early 1950s. CBS journalist Edward R. Murrow, who had built his reputation covering World War II on radio, was the first television reporter to take on Joseph McCarthy, the Wisconsin senator who falsely accused many people of having Communist sympathies. Murrow’s televised reports on McCarthy helped turn public opinion, demonstrating for the first time that television could hold political power accountable. It was a watershed moment – proof that the medium was not merely entertainment, but a force in democracy.
The arrival of colour broadcasting
Black-and-white television dominated American screens well into the 1960s. Colour television technology had been demonstrated as early as 1929, and equipment had been developed in the 1940s, but the legal battle over which colour system to adopt took years. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) initially approved a CBS-sponsored colour system in 1950, but reversed course in December 1953, approving RCA’s competing system instead. This NTSC transmission standard was adopted by broadcasters in January 1954. Despite the official adoption, colour sets did not see widespread household penetration for more than a decade – it was the late 1960s before colour television truly became the norm in American living rooms.
Public broadcasting: an alternative vision
As commercial television grew increasingly profit-driven, a parallel movement emerged to preserve broadcasting as a public good. The early years of public television in the United States were dominated by National Educational Television (NET), founded in 1952, which relied primarily on funding from the Ford Foundation. Following the Public Broadcasting Act of 1967 – signed by President Lyndon B. Johnson – the government-funded Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB) was established, and in 1969 it founded the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) as NET’s successor.
The PBS broadcast network debuted in 1970 and in its early years featured acclaimed programming such as Sesame Street and Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood. Unlike commercial networks that depended on advertising revenue, PBS does not accept advertising and is funded through congressional appropriations, station pledge drives, and donations, with the explicit goal of making educational and informative programming available to all. PBS represented a fundamentally different philosophy: television as a public service, not a commercial product. This tension between the commercial and public broadcasting models would echo across the world’s television systems in the decades that followed.
Global broadcasting models: diverse paths
As television spread globally after World War II, different countries made different choices about how to organise it. Britain’s BBC, funded by a licence fee and protected from direct government control, became the template for public service broadcasting in much of Europe and the Commonwealth. Germany began broadcasting its national television service as early as 1935. Many newly independent nations, particularly in Asia and Africa, chose a government-owned model, seeing television as a tool of national development and unity rather than commercial entertainment. These divergent choices produced vastly different broadcasting ecosystems – from the intensely market-driven American model to state-run systems in much of the developing world.
India’s television story: Doordarshan and beyond
India’s television journey is one of the most distinctive in the world, shaped by its post-independence politics, developmental priorities, and sheer cultural diversity. It began with a modest experiment in public service telecasting on September 15, 1959, when a makeshift studio in Delhi transmitted signals through a small transmitter. This was Doordarshan – a Hindi word meaning “distant vision” – operating initially as part of All India Radio, with programming focused almost entirely on education and information.
Doordarshan began as an experimental transmission with a limited broadcast radius of about 25 miles (40 km). Broadcasts began twice weekly for about an hour daily, focused mainly on informational and educational content. Its longest-running programme, Krishi Darshan (“A View of Agriculture”), launched in 1967, was designed to deliver agricultural guidance to rural farmers – a clear statement of the government’s vision for what television should do.
1982: the year that changed everything
For over two decades, Indian television grew slowly, reaching only a handful of cities and remaining a curiosity for the elite. The turning point arrived in 1982. In 1982 the government invested in antenna-based broadcast infrastructure, and colour television sets were imported in bulk ahead of the Asian Games held in Delhi that year. The live colour broadcast of the 9th Asian Games was a national sensation. Suddenly, television was no longer just an educational tool – it was spectacle, it was aspiration, and demand for colour sets exploded across the country.
Colour television in India was formally introduced with the live telecast of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s Independence Day speech on August 15, 1982, followed by the colour broadcast of the 1982 Asian Games. That same year, Doordarshan transitioned into a national broadcaster with the launch of DD National, bringing a unified television service to audiences across India for the first time. The 1980s became Doordarshan’s golden age – mythological serials like Ramayan (1987) and Mahabharat (1988) drew viewers in numbers that remain staggering even today.
Liberalisation and the satellite revolution
India’s television landscape was transformed again in the 1990s. Economic liberalisation in 1991 opened the country’s markets, and the arrival of CNN’s live coverage of the Gulf War in Indian homes was a revelation – television could be global, live, and 24/7. In 1992, Zee TV, founded by Subhash Chandra, became India’s first privately-owned Hindi satellite channel, followed quickly by STAR TV and a cascade of other private broadcasters. Doordarshan’s three-decade monopoly over Indian broadcasting was over.
The shift shattered the government’s exclusive grip on the airwaves and unleashed a content explosion. By 2025, the Government of India reported that India had 918 operational private satellite TV channels, serving a nationwide audience of more than 900 million viewers. India’s path – from a single government channel broadcasting farming tips in 1959 to one of the world’s largest and most diverse television markets – mirrors the country’s own broader transformation.
From broadcast to stream: the ongoing evolution
The story of television didn’t end with satellite and cable. Digital television emerged in the 1990s, high-definition broadcasting followed, and then – most disruptively – the internet turned the entire broadcast model on its head. Streaming platforms bypassed traditional schedules, regulators, and gatekeepers entirely. In India, platforms like Hotstar, Zee5, and Netflix not only competed with television channels but began producing original content that the old Doordarshan could never have imagined. Globally, the question of who controls what people watch – and who profits from it – remains as contested as it was when Farnsworth and RCA were fighting over patents nearly a century ago.
What began as a flickering straight line transmitted across a San Francisco laboratory in 1927 has become the defining medium of modern life. Television’s history is ultimately a history of who controls the image – and what that image is used for.
