The internet was not invented by a single person, nor did it emerge overnight. It grew from a Cold War military experiment into a sprawling global infrastructure that now connects over five billion people. And once social media arrived, it transformed that infrastructure into something far more personal – a platform where any individual could speak to the world. Understanding how that journey unfolded is essential to understanding how communication itself has been redefined in the modern era.

From Cold War fear to global network: the birth of the internet
The story begins in the 1950s, at the height of Cold War tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union. American military strategists feared that a Soviet nuclear strike could destroy the country’s telephone network in a single blow, leaving commanders with no way to coordinate a response. The solution they envisioned was a communications system with no single central point – one where data could find its own path through multiple routes, surviving even widespread destruction.
That vision gave birth to ARPANET (Advanced Research Projects Agency Network). Funded by ARPA, an arm of the U.S. Defense Department, in the late 1960s, its initial purpose was to link computers at Pentagon-funded research institutions over telephone lines. On October 29, 1969, the network sent its first message – intended to be “LOGIN” – from a computer at the University of California, Los Angeles, to Stanford Research Institute. The system crashed after only the first two letters were transmitted. So the very first message ever sent across what would become the internet was, fittingly, “LO.”
Packet switching: the technology that made it all possible
The secret behind ARPANET’s resilience was a concept called packet switching. Rather than requiring a single dedicated connection, packet switching breaks a file into thousands of small segments called “packets,” distributes them across a network, and reassembles them at their destination. This made data transmission both efficient and highly reliable, even over damaged or disrupted networks. In 1965, British scientist Donald Davies developed this method of splitting data into blocks before sending it, ensuring each packet could take its own route from place to place.
ARPANET grew rapidly in the early 1970s, with many universities and government computers joining the network. As email became widespread across connected sites by around 1973, the network’s character began to shift. Rather than simply a tool for accessing expensive computing power, ARPANET had started to become a place to communicate, exchange ideas, and even make friends.
TCP/IP and the modern internet
As the number of separate networks multiplied, a new problem emerged – they could not communicate with each other. Computer scientist Vinton Cerf solved this by developing TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), a universal set of rules that allowed different networks to exchange data seamlessly. On January 1, 1983, ARPANET switched entirely to TCP/IP, marking the official birth of the modern internet as we know it.
The World Wide Web: opening the internet to everyone
The internet and the World Wide Web are not the same thing – a distinction that matters. The internet is the underlying infrastructure of connected networks. The Web is the system of linked documents and pages that runs on top of it. In 1991, British researcher Tim Berners-Lee at CERN introduced the World Wide Web, making it possible to navigate the internet as a web of information rather than simply a tool for sending and receiving files. To do this, he developed the core technologies still in use today: HTML (HyperText Markup Language), URLs, and HTTP.
What followed was explosive growth. By 1993, the number of websites had reached 600, and the White House and United Nations had gone online. The number of computers connected to the internet’s backbone had grown from 2,000 in 1985 to over 2 million. The release of the Mosaic browser – the first to display text and images on the same page – made the Web accessible to people who had no technical background whatsoever. The commercial internet era had arrived.
The social turn: from information exchange to personal expression
By the mid-1990s, the Web was primarily a place to consume information. Pages were static, publishing was one-directional, and ordinary users were audiences, not contributors. That changed with the emergence of Web 2.0 – a term describing platforms built around user-generated content, interactivity, and participation. Social media started in the mid-1990s with platforms like Classmates.com and SixDegrees.com, the latter being the first online service designed for people to connect using their actual names, with features like profiles, friends lists, and school affiliations.
The platforms that followed progressively lowered the barrier to participation. In 2004, Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook revolutionized social networking, and Twitter followed in 2006, introduced by Jack Dorsey, with its 140-character limit distinguishing itself through compressed, rapid communication. YouTube, launched in 2005, made video creation and sharing a mass activity. Instagram arrived in 2010, centering the experience around images. Each platform added a new layer to how people expressed themselves online.
The shift from desktop to mobile
A further transformation came with the smartphone. With the introduction of smartphones, social media became always-on and camera-first, based on quick hits of content rather than longer posts written at a desktop computer. Platforms like Instagram and Snapchat were designed from the ground up for the phone screen. Then came TikTok – powered by an algorithm that could surface any creator’s content to millions of strangers overnight, regardless of follower count. As of 2025, there are well over 5 billion social media user identities worldwide.
Social media as a tool for political mobilization
Perhaps the most consequential shift brought about by social media has been its impact on political life. Social media has transformed how politicians communicate, allowing them to bypass traditional news outlets and engage directly with the public, enabling more immediate and unfiltered messaging. But its power extends well beyond official political campaigns.
The most vivid example is the Arab Spring. During 2010 and 2011, activists across Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, and other countries in the Middle East and North Africa used Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to coordinate protests, circulate footage of government crackdowns, and reach international audiences – all while bypassing state-controlled media. Despite lower overall internet penetration compared to the United States, social media became a crucial tool for political activists during the Arab Spring. In Egypt, a Facebook group created to memorialize blogger Khaled Said – who died at the hands of police – rapidly gathered over half a million members and served as a rallying point that contributed to mass protests in Tahrir Square.
Social media has also transformed grassroots organizing in other democracies. The #BlackLivesMatter movement demonstrated how a hashtag could evolve into a sustained global campaign. Social media played a critical role in mobilizing supporters, coordinating events, and drawing national and international attention to the cause. Research published in the journal Nature in 2012 – analyzing a 61-million-person experiment on Facebook – found that certain messages promoted by close friends increased overall voter turnout by an estimated 340,000 additional votes.
Bypassing the gatekeepers
A recurring theme in social media’s political impact is its ability to route around traditional media gatekeepers – editors, producers, and journalists who once controlled what reached the public. Social media offers a direct connection to people and allows for the spread of ideas that circumvent journalistic gatekeepers, enabling political actors to present uncontested messages directly to their audience. This has democratized communication in meaningful ways. The participatory structure of social media has empowered ordinary users to influence political conversations once dominated by elites.
But the same openness carries serious risks. The openness that fosters civic engagement also facilitates the viral spread of misinformation, manipulation, and hate speech, creating complex challenges for democratic stability and public trust. Without editorial filters, unverified claims can reach millions before corrections do. Extremist groups have exploited the same tools used by activists and organizers.
Reshaping journalism and the public sphere
The rise of the internet and social media has fundamentally disrupted traditional journalism. Where once a newspaper or broadcaster held a monopoly on reaching large audiences, today the boundaries between journalism, politics, and citizen participation have blurred, giving rise to a digital public sphere where information circulates rapidly and interactively. Eyewitness videos filmed on smartphones are now central to breaking news coverage. Journalists monitor Twitter for developing stories. Citizen reporters document events that professional newsrooms might miss.
This has created what media scholars call a hybrid media system – one where digital and traditional media co-evolve and where news flows across multiple ecosystems simultaneously. Over time, social media platforms have become implicated in the spread of disinformation, the degradation of public discourse, and the rise of authoritarian leaders – a trajectory that has forced both journalists and citizens to develop sharper habits of critical evaluation.
The algorithmic age
The most recent chapter in this digital revolution belongs not to any particular platform, but to the algorithm. Today, what billions of people see on social media is not chosen by editors or even by the accounts they follow – it is determined by machine-learning systems designed to maximize engagement. The evolution of social media has shifted from simple chronological updates to algorithm-driven feeds, AI-curated content, and a video-first experience that now shapes how news, culture, and political opinion are formed and spread. The new gatekeepers of public information are lines of code – and unlike editors, they are not accountable to professional standards or public interest norms.
The internet’s journey from a classified military network to the connective tissue of modern civilization has taken less than sixty years. Social media’s rise within that broader story represents one of the fastest and most disruptive shifts in the history of human communication – one that has handed extraordinary power to ordinary people, while simultaneously creating new vulnerabilities that societies are still figuring out how to manage.
