Every morning, billions of people wake up and instinctively reach for their smartphones – scrolling through news feeds, checking messages, watching short videos. It feels entirely natural. But this seamless, instantaneous flow of information is the result of a journey spanning tens of thousands of years. The story of how humans developed communication media is not simply a history of technology. It is a history of society itself – of how major shifts in the way people lived, worked, and organized power repeatedly demanded new ways of sharing information, and how each new medium, in turn, reshaped the world that created it.

Communication in pre-agricultural societies: the spoken word

To understand where communication media began, we need to go back to a time before farming, cities, or writing. Human communication can be traced back to the origin of speech around 100,000 BCE, when early humans lived as nomadic hunter-gatherers in small, tight-knit groups. In this world, the only medium available was the human voice, supplemented by gesture.

Communication in pre-agricultural societies was entirely oral. It was immediate, face-to-face, and most critically, ephemeral – once spoken, a message was gone. The entire store of a group’s knowledge, its history, its social rules, and its survival techniques lived exclusively in human memory, passed from one generation to the next through storytelling, song, and ritual. The most influential members of these communities were typically the elders – those who held the deepest reservoir of collective memory.

The earliest attempts to move beyond pure speech came through symbols. Cave paintings, petroglyphs, and pictograms date back roughly 30,000 years, with some of the oldest discovered inside Chauvet Cave in France. These were deliberate acts of communication – early humans leaving marks for others to interpret. They represent humanity’s first instinct to make information permanent, to store it somewhere other than a fragile human mind.

The agricultural revolution and the birth of writing

Around 10,000 BCE, a transformation of staggering consequence began: the agricultural revolution. Humans settled down, cultivated crops, domesticated animals, and built permanent communities. Villages became towns; towns became cities; cities became empires. This new, complex society generated a new, complex problem: memory alone could no longer manage it.

How do you track taxes across thousands of households? How do you record the laws that govern a territory stretching hundreds of miles? How do you store the inventory of a royal granary? Oral tradition simply could not cope with this scale of information. The solution was the most consequential invention in the history of human communication: writing.

The beginning of the “Manuscript Era,” around 3500 BCE, marked the turn from oral to written culture, corresponding directly with the shift to a more settled, agrarian way of life. As people began planning how to plant, store, and trade food, they needed accounting systems. The Sumerians of Mesopotamia developed cuneiform – wedge-shaped marks pressed into wet clay tablets – primarily to record economic transactions. The first writing system is generally believed to have been developed in prehistoric Sumer by the late 4th millennium BCE, with Egyptian hieroglyphs and the Indus Valley script appearing around the same era.

Writing transformed information from something fleeting into something permanent and portable. Laws could be carved in stone. Religious texts could be preserved across centuries. An idea could now travel across space and time, far beyond the reach of any single human voice. However, this revolution had a critical limitation: producing written material remained painstakingly slow and expensive. Every document had to be copied by hand, making books rare and literacy a privilege confined to a small, powerful elite.

The print revolution: Gutenberg and the democratization of information

For roughly 5,000 years after writing’s invention, the fundamental bottleneck remained: information could be recorded, but it could not be mass-produced. That constraint was shattered in 1440 when Johannes Gutenberg, a German goldsmith, developed the movable-type printing press. A single Renaissance printing press could produce up to 3,600 pages per workday, compared to just forty by hand-printing. The impact was immediate and irreversible.

Historians estimate that European presses produced more than twenty million volumes by 1500, and between 150 and 200 million copies of books by 1600. The price of books collapsed. Literacy expanded. For the first time, a merchant, a student, or a tradesman could afford a book. The spread of the printing press introduced the era of mass communication, which altered the structure of European society.

The press was also a political earthquake. It enabled reformers like Martin Luther to distribute their ideas rapidly across Europe, fuelling the Protestant Reformation. It accelerated the Renaissance by allowing scholars in different cities to read the same texts and build on each other’s work. Its widespread adoption challenged existing power structures, reshaped how knowledge was produced and controlled, and laid the foundation for the modern information age.

Crucially, the printing press established a pattern that would repeat itself with every subsequent communication technology: a new medium emerges, dramatically lowers the cost of distributing information, and in doing so, shifts power. Before the press, the Catholic Church and ruling monarchies controlled what could be known. After it, that monopoly began to crack.

The industrial society and the rise of mass media

The next great wave came with the Industrial Revolution, roughly from the late 18th century through the mid-19th century. Industrial society developed as agricultural, craft-based economies were supplanted by national economies based on factory work and assembly-line methods of mass production. People flooded into cities. Society became larger, more anonymous, faster-moving – and it demanded media that could match that pace.

Several communication breakthroughs arrived in rapid succession during this period:

The steam-powered press (1830s) allowed newspapers to be printed in the thousands rather than the hundreds, giving birth to the “penny press” – cheap, mass-market newspapers that ordinary people could afford. The news became a daily product for the masses, not just the literate wealthy. The mechanical printing press, powered by steam, could print thousands of pages per hour, dramatically accelerating the speed at which news reached people.

The telegraph (1840s) was perhaps the most disorienting invention since writing. For the first time in history, communication was decoupled from transportation. Before it, a message could only travel as fast as the horse, ship, or train carrying it. The telegraph meant a dispatch could cross a continent in minutes. Time and distance, which had always governed the flow of information, suddenly became almost irrelevant.

The telephone, radio, and television followed over the subsequent decades, each adding a new dimension – voice, then mass simultaneous broadcast, then image. Radio created the first truly mass media experience, with millions able to experience events simultaneously. Television combined radio’s reach with photography’s visual power, making it arguably the most dominant medium of the 20th century.

In the industrial society, these media were predominantly one-to-many: a broadcaster or publisher sent content outward to a passive audience. The model was vertical – a small number of powerful institutions controlled what millions of people heard, read, and saw.

The information society: when data becomes power

By the latter half of the 20th century, something fundamental began to shift. While the first half of the 20th century saw the dominant form of economic production shift from agricultural to industrial, the second half was characterized by a shift toward the production, distribution, and manipulation of information.

The sociologist Daniel Bell was among the first to name this transformation clearly. Bell posited information as the defining resource of the post-World War II era, while raw materials had been the core resource of the agricultural society, and energy was central to the industrial age. This framework – sometimes called the post-industrial society or information society – describes a world where the production and exchange of knowledge becomes the primary driver of economic and social life.

The futurist Alvin Toffler captured this progression memorably in his 1980 book The Third Wave. He described human civilization as moving through three distinct waves: an agricultural first wave, an industrial second wave characterized by mass production and mass media, and a third wave defined by information and knowledge as the central resources of society.

The development of the personal computer in the 1980s, followed by the rise of the internet in the 1990s, and the advent of smartphones and social media in the 2000s, completely reshaped how societies function in a matter of just a few decades. What had taken the agricultural-to-industrial transition several centuries was now happening in a single generation.

The internet era: from one-to-many to many-to-many

The “Internet Era,” beginning around 1990, has featured the most rapid dispersion of a new communication method in history, as the spread of the internet and digital media signaled the beginning of the digital age. Its implications for the structure of communication were radical.

The industrial media model was vertical: publishers and broadcasters decided what information the public received. The internet shattered that structure. According to the United Nations Public Administration Network, the Information Age was formed by capitalizing on computer miniaturization advances, which led to modernized information and internet communications as the driving force of social evolution. With a blog, a social media account, or a video channel, any individual could now reach a potential global audience. The cost of publishing dropped effectively to zero. The old gatekeepers – editors, publishers, broadcast licensees – no longer held exclusive control over what information could circulate.

This shift from a one-to-many broadcast model to a many-to-many network model is one of the most significant transformations in communication history. The ‘information society’ concept suggests a total social transformation driven by this shift – one where knowledge itself becomes the primary commodity and source of social power.

Information as power: the defining dynamic of our era

Across this entire history, one theme runs consistently: each new communication medium changes not just how information is shared, but who controls it – and therefore, who holds power.

In pre-agricultural societies, power resided with those who held the best memory. In agricultural societies, control of writing gave scribes, priests, and rulers a decisive advantage. The printing press began to loosen that grip. Industrial mass media created new power centres – press barons, broadcasting corporations, state media. And now, in the information society, there is ongoing debate concerning whether recent breakthroughs in artificial intelligence and biotechnology have spawned a Fourth Industrial Revolution, heralding yet another reconfiguration of who controls information and on what terms.

The new power brokers of the information age are the companies that control the infrastructure of information flow: search engines that organize global knowledge, social media platforms that govern the digital public square, and data companies that know more about individual behaviour than any previous institution in history. Most economists and researchers agree that information and communication-related activities account for an unprecedented proportion of economic investment and output in wealthy societies.

The democratizing promise of the internet – that anyone can publish, anyone can be heard – sits in direct tension with the concentration of the platforms through which that publishing happens. It is a tension that echoes every previous transition in communication history: new media expands access, but new power structures quickly emerge around the medium itself.

A continuous story of transformation

From the spoken word around a campfire to the algorithmically curated feed on a smartphone, the development of communication media follows a clear pattern. Each major shift in how society organizes itself – from hunting and gathering, to agriculture, to industrial production, to information – has both required and produced new forms of communication. Writing served the needs of the agricultural empire. The mass press served the industrial city. The internet serves the networked information economy. And each medium did not merely reflect the society that created it; it actively reshaped what that society became.

Understanding this history is not an academic exercise. It is the foundation for understanding why the media landscape looks the way it does today – who controls it, who benefits from it, and what its next transformation might look like.
