According to research published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, vox pop viewpoints have a substantial influence on how audiences perceive public opinion on any given issue.
However, vox pops have clear limitations. Because respondents are not scientifically selected, their opinions cannot be treated as representative of the broader population. A journalist interviewing ten people outside a train station is capturing a snapshot of views, not a statistically reliable sample. Research from Belgian television news found that journalists rarely clarify to viewers that vox pops don’t represent the general population – a practice that can lead audiences to make inaccurate assumptions about what “most people” think.
Best practices for conducting vox pops
Good vox-pop journalism follows some important guidelines. Questions should be open-ended, avoiding simple yes-or-no responses. The journalist should approach a diverse range of people in terms of age, gender, and background, to capture a wider spectrum of opinion. The location and time of day should also be varied, since interviewing people only at a business district during lunch hour, for example, will skew the sample toward working professionals. And critically, participants should always be informed about how their responses will be used – consent and transparency matter as much here as in any formal research setting.

Raw data is rarely ready for analysis straight away. It often contains errors, duplicates, inconsistent formatting, and other problems. This is where data cleaning tools become indispensable. OpenRefine is one of the most popular free tools for this purpose. Originally developed by Google, it allows journalists to clean messy datasets, merge duplicate entries, and transform data from one format to another – all without needing advanced coding skills. The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ), the organisation behind the Panama Papers and Pandora Papers investigations, lists OpenRefine as one of its essential tools.

Datawrapper, another widely used tool, was specifically designed for journalists who need to create publication-ready charts quickly – the entire process, from importing data to publishing a graphic, can take just a couple of minutes.
These visualisation platforms have been instrumental in major stories. The annual Global Investigative Journalism Network (GIJN) awards consistently recognise data-driven investigations that rely on such tools to make complex information accessible to the public.
Spreadsheets and databases
It may sound basic, but spreadsheets remain one of the most important tools in any journalist’s research kit. Programmes like Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets allow reporters to organise, sort, filter, and perform calculations on data. Pivot tables – a feature within spreadsheets – are particularly useful for summarising large datasets, spotting patterns, and identifying inconsistencies. ICIJ’s data team uses spreadsheets daily, though they note that sensitive data should be handled on secure, in-house servers rather than cloud-based platforms for security reasons.
For larger and more complex datasets, journalists may turn to relational databases and tools like Neo4j, a graph database platform that was central to the Panama Papers investigation. Neo4j allowed reporters to map relationships between offshore companies, their directors, and beneficial owners – connections that would have been nearly impossible to trace using spreadsheets alone.

Not all data is neatly packaged in downloadable files. Often, the information a journalist needs is scattered across websites, government portals, and social media platforms. Web scraping tools – such as the Web Scraper Chrome extension or Python-based scraping scripts – allow reporters to automatically extract data from web pages and compile it into structured formats for analysis. As a Columbia Journalism Review analysis found, such tools can be helpful for science journalists who need to quickly assess whether a new study is genuinely significant or merely incremental.
Government and public data portals
Governments at all levels produce vast amounts of data – on everything from crime statistics and public health to environmental quality and education outcomes. Portals like Data.gov (in the United States), the Humanitarian Data Exchange (HDX) managed by the United Nations, and India’s data.gov.in provide free access to datasets that can power dozens of stories. And the Bellingcat Online Investigations Toolkit, publicly released in 2024, offers a comprehensive dashboard of free digital investigative tools covering satellite imagery, social media analysis, transportation tracking, and archiving.
Bringing it all together: the modern journalist’s workflow
The most effective journalists don’t rely on a single tool or method. Instead, they combine several approaches depending on the story. An investigation into government spending might begin with a Freedom of Information request, followed by cleaning the resulting data in OpenRefine, analysing it in a spreadsheet, visualising key findings in Flourish, and then conducting vox-pop interviews to capture the human impact of the spending decisions. A political story might draw on opinion polls from Pew or Gallup, supplemented by the journalist’s own street-level interviews and contextualised with academic research found through Google Scholar.
The key is to match the tool to the task. Surveys provide structured, quantifiable data. Vox pops add human voices and emotional texture. Digital tools enable the analysis of datasets too large for any human to process manually. And published research from other fields provides the context and expertise that elevates a news story from informative to genuinely insightful.

A vox pop is only as valuable as the diversity of voices it captures. And a digital tool is only as reliable as the journalist’s ability to interpret its output with scepticism and precision.
