The field’s growth has roughly paralleled the modern environmental movement, which gained mainstream traction after Rachel Carson published Silent Spring in 1962. The book exposed the dangers of pesticide use and is widely credited with sparking the environmental movement in the United States. The creation of the Society of Environmental Journalists in 1990 further professionalised the field, with a stated mission of improving the quality and visibility of environmental reporting.
The Bhopal gas tragedy: a turning point for Indian environmental journalism
In India, the trajectory of environmental journalism changed dramatically after the Bhopal Gas Tragedy of December 1984. On the night of December 2-3, approximately 45 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a Union Carbide pesticide plant, immediately killing thousands of people and eventually causing an estimated 15,000 to 20,000 deaths. Around half a million survivors suffered from respiratory problems, blindness, and other long-term health effects.
What makes this disaster particularly relevant to media studies is the role of journalist Rajkumar Keswani, who had warned about the impending danger months before the leak. Research published in Frontiers in Psychology confirms that media exposure, attention, and credibility significantly influence people’s awareness of environmental consequences and their sense of personal responsibility toward ecological issues.

Beyond informing, mass media acts as a stimulator and mobiliser. It creates urgency around environmental issues and galvanises communities into action. Global campaigns like Earth Hour depend on media to coordinate simultaneous participation across time zones and continents.
