When you open a research report, the abstract and introduction might catch your eye first – but the real substance lies in what comes after: the main body. This is where the actual research unfolds, step by step, from laying the theoretical groundwork to presenting hard evidence. The main body of a research report is not just a collection of sections; it is a structured narrative that takes the reader from “what we already know” to “what we found.” Understanding each component – the literature review, objectives, methodology, data presentation, and findings – helps both researchers write better reports and readers evaluate them more critically.

The literature review: building on what’s already known

Every research report begins its main body by situating the study within the existing body of knowledge. This is the job of the literature review. According to the USC Libraries research guide, a literature review surveys prior research published in books, scholarly articles, and other relevant sources to provide a description, summary, and critical evaluation of those works in relation to the research problem being investigated.

The literature review does more than summarize past work. As Scribbr’s writing guide explains, it gives researchers the chance to demonstrate familiarity with the topic, develop a theoretical framework, position their work in relation to other researchers, and show how the study addresses a gap or contributes to an ongoing debate.

A strong literature review is also methodologically transparent. Research published in the Journal of Business Research emphasizes that the quality of a literature review depends heavily on which sources are included and how they were selected – a poorly scoped review can produce skewed conclusions or false evidence of trends that do not actually exist. Writing down every selection decision from the start ensures transparency and allows readers to assess how the review was conducted.

Types of literature reviews

Not all literature reviews are written the same way. ATLAS.ti’s research guide identifies several common approaches: narrative reviews, which offer a qualitative summary of relevant literature and integrate interpretations; systematic reviews, which methodically synthesize a body of research using a rigorous and reproducible process; and meta-analyses, which statistically combine results from multiple studies to derive more comprehensive insights. The choice of review type depends on the research question and the goals of the study.

In terms of organization, the UCSD Writing Resources guide points out that literature reviews can be arranged chronologically – moving from oldest to most recent research – categorically, by grouping related studies together, or by contrasting opposing views. Regardless of the structure, a literature review should never simply describe previous work; it must synthesize and critically evaluate it to make a clear case for why the current study is needed.

Research objectives: stating what the study sets out to do

Following the literature review, the report must clearly state its research objectives – the specific goals the study aims to achieve. Objectives translate the broad research problem, which the literature review has established as valid and important, into focused, actionable targets. They tell the reader exactly what the researcher is trying to find out, measure, or explain.

Well-written objectives are precise and directly connected to the gaps identified in the literature. As outlined in SAGE’s research methodology framework, a research problem statement should include the topic, the problem within that topic, a justification based on past research, identified deficiencies in existing knowledge, and the importance of addressing the problem for its intended audience. Objectives flow directly from this problem statement – they are the operationalized response to what the literature has revealed as missing or unresolved.

The methodology section: explaining how the research was done

The methodology section is where the researcher explains the “how” behind the study. The USC Libraries writing guide defines its core purpose clearly: the methodology section answers two fundamental questions – how was the data collected or generated, and how was it analyzed? Everything in this section should be written in the past tense, since it describes completed research.

A well-constructed methodology section contains several key components. A methods-writing guide published in PMC identifies these as research design, study setting and time frame, materials and instruments used, study procedures, and data analysis techniques. Each element must be described in enough detail that another researcher could replicate the study and reproduce the results.

Research design: quantitative, qualitative, or mixed methods

The first decision a researcher must make and justify in the methodology is the overall research design. RMIT University’s Library guide explains that there are three main types of research methods: qualitative research, which gathers data about lived experiences, emotions, or behaviors; quantitative research, which relies on numerical data and statistical analysis; and mixed methods, which combine both approaches. Choosing between them should depend on the nature of the research question, not convenience.

Crucially, the methodology section must justify every methodological choice. Research.com’s methodology writing guide highlights that transparency about constraints – such as sample size limitations, data collection challenges, or potential biases – is essential. Researchers should also outline steps taken to minimize these risks, such as triangulation, pilot studies, or the use of control variables, demonstrating that they have critically assessed the strengths and weaknesses of their approach.

Sampling and data collection

Beyond the broad design choice, the methodology must detail the sampling strategy and data collection methods. A comprehensive methodology writing guide notes that this includes describing the target population, sample size, sampling method (such as random, purposive, or convenience sampling), inclusion and exclusion criteria, and relevant demographic characteristics. If the study analyzes existing data rather than collecting new data, the source, scope, and relevance of that dataset must be clearly explained.

The statistical analysis component typically appears as the final part of the methodology. According to PMC’s methods-writing research, this subsection should identify the specific statistical tests used and explain the threshold for statistical significance, providing a complete picture of how the raw data was transformed into analyzable results.

Data presentation: turning numbers and words into evidence

With the methodology established, the report moves into presenting the data. This section – often called the results or findings section – is where the raw output of the research is displayed in an organized, accessible form. Its sole job is to report what was found, not to interpret it.

Wordvice’s research writing guide specifies that the findings section should include data presented in tables, charts, graphs, and other figures; a contextual explanation of that data in sentence form; all data corresponding to the central research questions; and relevant secondary findings. Any information that does not present direct findings should be left out of this section.

A useful guiding principle for organizing data comes from a data presentation guide published in PMC: start general, then go specific. Begin with the response rate and a description of research participants, then move to key findings and relevant statistical analyses. Data should always answer the research questions identified earlier – and the process of data collection belongs in the methodology, not here.

Using visuals effectively

Tables, charts, and figures are not decorative – they are tools for communication. The PMC data presentation guide advises that text, tables, and graphics complement each other. Simple statistics such as means and standard deviations are better reported in text, while more complex data involving multiple variables are better illustrated with tables or graphs accompanied by textual interpretation. The same data should never appear in more than one format – the method chosen should reflect what the researcher most wants the reader to compare or understand.

Scribbr’s results-writing guide adds that all visual elements must carry clear, descriptive titles and labels. Results should be presented in a logical order – either by research question, by method, from general to specific, or from most to least important – and always written in the past tense.

Findings and analysis: making sense of the evidence

Presenting data and analyzing it are two distinct tasks. Western Illinois University’s research guide draws a clear line: the results section reports and reveals the analysis, while the analysis section describes what was done with the data found. The findings section should narrate results without interpretation, providing direction for the discussion section that follows.

In practice, MW Editing’s research writing guide recommends a strong findings structure that includes an introduction to the findings, data presentation, description of key results, a detailed analysis, a brief summary, and acknowledgment of any ethical considerations and limitations. Quantitative findings rely on statistics, tables, and graphs, while qualitative findings center on themes, categories, and participant quotes. The key is that the findings section presents data objectively – interpretation comes later in the discussion.

This separation matters because, as SciPub+ notes in its results-writing guide, the findings section is the empirical heart of the manuscript – the evidence upon which all conclusions will be built. Mixing interpretation into the findings weakens both the objectivity of the data presentation and the analytical clarity of the discussion.

From raw data to insightful findings

The journey from raw data to meaningful findings follows a clear sequence. Research published in the MAMC Journal of Medical Sciences describes this well: data analysis begins with the preparation of tables and figures summarizing key results, which then serve as the building blocks for writing the results section. The results, in turn, answer the research question the study attempted to address, while the discussion section handles the broader interpretation and comparison with existing literature.

For qualitative studies, this analytical journey often involves thematic coding – systematically identifying, labeling, and grouping patterns across interviews, observations, or texts. Scribbr’s dissertation guide describes a typical qualitative analysis process: transcripts are coded by independent researchers, preliminary themes are identified, a codebook is developed, all data is then coded against the finalized codebook, and member checking with participants is conducted to verify accuracy. This process ensures that findings are grounded in the data rather than imposed on it.

How the sections work together

What makes the main body of a research report powerful is not any single section, but the logical flow between all of them. The literature review establishes what is known and what is missing. The objectives define what the study will specifically address. The methodology explains how data was gathered and processed. The data presentation lays out what was found. And the findings and analysis connect the evidence to the research questions.

Each section builds on the one before it. Skipping steps or blurring boundaries – for instance, mixing interpretation into the data presentation, or failing to justify methodological choices – weakens the entire report. A well-executed main body is not just technically sound; it tells a coherent, credible story about a research problem, from the moment the question was formed to the moment the evidence speaks for itself.
