Where a study takes place is not just a logistical detail – it fundamentally shapes what researchers can learn, how reliable their findings are, and whether those findings hold up in the real world. In communication research, the location of a study is a core methodological decision that determines the nature of the data collected and the conclusions that can be drawn. Broadly, communication studies based on location fall into three categories: field research, laboratory experiments, and field experiments. Each comes with its own strengths, limitations, and appropriate use cases. Understanding the differences between them helps both researchers and students evaluate the credibility and applicability of any communication study they encounter.

What is field research in communication?

Field research refers to the collection of data outside a controlled environment – in the real world where communication actually happens. Researchers go to the places where audiences live, work, and consume media, rather than bringing participants into an artificial setting. According to Wikipedia’s entry on field research, it involves a range of methods including informal interviews, direct observation, participation in group life, and collective discussions.

In communication studies, field research might involve observing how people in a community engage with local news, surveying audiences about their media habits at home, or conducting in-depth interviews with journalists and editors in their own newsrooms. The defining feature is that the researcher exercises little to no control over the variables at play. Life goes on around the study, unmanipulated.

Advantages of field research

The primary strength of field research is its ecological validity – its findings reflect real-world behavior because data is collected in real-world conditions. As noted in a comparative review published in Fortune Journals, field research studies are more likely to be generalisable to real-life contexts because they capture a greater variety of situations and environments that participants naturally experience. When a researcher observes how rural audiences access news on mobile phones, or how urban commuters consume podcasts, that data carries direct relevance to actual media behavior.

Field research is also particularly useful for studying phenomena that cannot be ethically or practically replicated in a laboratory – such as long-term media consumption patterns, community-level media influence, or the role of media during a crisis.

Limitations of field research

The freedom of the natural setting is also its biggest drawback. Without control over external variables, it is difficult to establish cause-and-effect relationships. The same Fortune Journals review cautions that the lack of control and the difficulty of precisely characterizing the field environment can make it hard to judge the actual generalisability of a study – counterintuitively undermining the very advantage it appears to offer. Additionally, researchers may face ethical challenges around informed consent when participants are unaware they are being observed.

Laboratory experiments: control as a research tool

At the opposite end of the location spectrum sits the laboratory experiment. According to the SAGE Encyclopedia of Communication Research Methods, the main function of laboratory experiments is controllability. Research conducted in naturally occurring environments is more susceptible to confounding variables – factors other than the one being tested that might influence outcomes. Laboratory experiments reduce these risks through careful design, thereby offering stronger explanatory power to show the specific influence of one variable on another.

A laboratory in communication research is typically a room or specifically designed space, often on a university campus, where the researcher controls noise, lighting, distractions, and even the exact content participants are exposed to. Crucially, laboratory experiments involve random assignment of participants and control groups, which is what makes it possible to draw causal inferences. For instance, researchers studying media violence might expose one group of participants to violent video game content and another group to neutral content, then measure both groups’ aggression levels under identical conditions. The experiment’s value lies in the precision of that comparison.

The SAGE Encyclopedia also notes that while Wilhelm Wundt is credited with developing the first psychological laboratory at the University of Leipzig in 1879, laboratory experimentation in communication studies grew substantially after World War II – partly driven by early research into the persuasive nature of wartime propaganda.

Advantages of laboratory experiments

The most significant advantage is internal validity – the confidence that the observed effect was actually caused by the variable being tested, not by some unrelated factor. Laboratories also enable easy replication: because conditions are documented and controlled, other researchers can repeat the study and verify the results. This makes laboratory research essential for building and testing communication theories systematically.

Limitations of laboratory experiments

Laboratory settings are artificial, and that artificiality has a cost. Participants who know they are being observed may alter their behavior – a well-documented problem known as the Hawthorne effect. More fundamentally, the controlled environment may simply not reflect how people actually consume and respond to media in their daily lives. A person watching a news clip in a quiet university lab behaves differently from the same person watching it at home, distracted, scrolling through their phone. This creates a problem of low external validity: findings from the lab may not translate meaningfully to the real world. As the Master’s in Communications guide to research methodologies explains, quantitative methods including lab experiments are powerful for predicting outcomes, but they must be evaluated alongside the conditions under which that data was gathered.

Field experiments: bridging the two worlds

Field experiments occupy the middle ground between the ecological richness of field research and the methodological rigour of laboratory experiments. According to the Communication Research iResearchNet, field experiments involve the manipulation of an independent variable in realistic circumstances. Like laboratory experiments, they are structured around experimental designs and incorporate randomisation. But unlike lab experiments, they are conducted in natural environments – communities, schools, workplaces, or even social media platforms.

A well-known example comes from political communication: research published in Political Communication by Yale University’s Institution for Social and Policy Studies highlights that field experimentation is a promising method for studying the effects of media messages on political attitudes and behavior, with examples drawn from the effects of television, radio, and online communication on real voter behavior. In one landmark study, Spanish-language radio advertisements were deployed to test their effect on Latino voter turnout in actual congressional elections – an experiment that could never be replicated with equivalent authenticity inside a lab.

Another striking example of field experimentation in communication research comes from a Harvard Kennedy School Gender Action Portal study, where a radio soap opera was broadcast in a rural community in Oaxaca, Mexico to examine how media influences social norms around gender violence. Researchers used natural geographical conditions to create treatment and control groups, then measured attitudinal changes through post-intervention surveys. The findings revealed that socially delivered information – broadcast publicly through a village loudspeaker – was more influential in shifting norms than information delivered privately to individuals. This kind of study is only possible in the field.

Field experiments on social media represent a newer frontier. MIT research on social media field experiments documents how researchers have used platform-based interventions – such as responding to tweets containing misinformation with corrective messages – to study communication effects in real-time, on real users, within their natural digital environments.

Advantages of field experiments

Field experiments offer higher external validity than laboratory studies because they take place in natural settings, meaning results are more likely to apply to real-world situations. At the same time, by retaining experimental structure – particularly random assignment – they maintain stronger internal validity than purely observational field research. This makes them especially valuable for evaluating the real-world impact of media campaigns, public health communication, and political advertising.

Limitations of field experiments

The natural setting that gives field experiments their advantage also creates complications. As the PMC-published research on lab-in-the-field experiments notes, researchers in the field must often relinquish the control of a standard laboratory, which creates risks such as communication spillovers between participants – where one group inadvertently learns about the treatment being applied to another group, biasing results. External events – a breaking news story, a political debate, or local conditions – can also interfere with and distort outcomes in ways that are impossible to anticipate or control.

Ethical challenges are also more pronounced in field experiments. When participants are unaware they are part of a study, obtaining informed consent becomes complicated, and researchers must carefully balance the need for authentic data against individuals’ rights to privacy and autonomy.

How context shapes research validity

The core insight of location-based classification is that context is not neutral. Where a study is conducted directly influences the type of validity it can achieve. Laboratory experiments maximise internal validity – the certainty that a tested variable caused an observed effect. Field research and field experiments maximise external validity – the likelihood that findings reflect and apply to the real world. These two forms of validity are often in tension with each other.

A useful way to understand this trade-off is through the lens of research purpose. If the goal is to test a specific media effects hypothesis under tightly defined conditions, the laboratory is the right tool. If the goal is to understand how a media campaign actually changes behavior in a community, the field is essential. And if the goal is to combine experimental rigour with real-world applicability – particularly for policy evaluation or intervention research – the field experiment offers the most productive middle path.

As Introduction to Communication Inquiry and Theory notes, qualitative field methods offer the opportunity to understand human communication as it occurs in natural contexts, while quantitative and experimental approaches are useful for predicting outcomes and testing theories. In practice, the most robust research programs in communication use multiple location-based methods in sequence – field research to identify phenomena, laboratory experiments to isolate mechanisms, and field experiments to test real-world applications.

Choosing the right location for your research

There is no universally superior location for communication research. The right choice depends on the research question, the resources available, and the type of validity the study needs to achieve. A study asking “Does exposure to health misinformation change people’s vaccination intentions?” may start in the laboratory to establish the effect under controlled conditions, and then move into field experiments to measure whether the same effect holds when people encounter misinformation on their actual social media feeds. This kind of methodological progression strengthens the overall body of knowledge far more than any single approach could on its own.

What this classification ultimately underscores is that a finding does not stand alone – it must always be understood in the context of where and how it was produced. A highly controlled lab result means something different from a field observation, and both mean something different from a randomised field experiment. For students and researchers in communication, understanding location-based classification is not just a taxonomic exercise. It is a foundational skill for critically evaluating evidence and designing studies that genuinely advance knowledge.
