Television once meant a single screen in the living room, a fixed broadcast schedule, and a limited number of channels. Today, it means something entirely different. The rise of the internet, smartphones, and streaming platforms has fundamentally transformed what television is, how it works, and how audiences engage with it. This transformation – often described as the convergence of television and new media – is one of the most significant shifts in the history of mass communication. It has reshaped content creation, distribution, and consumption on a global scale.

What is media convergence?

Media convergence refers to the merging of previously distinct media technologies, platforms, and industries into an interconnected system. In practical terms, it means that the boundaries between television, radio, print, and the internet have blurred. A news story that once aired exclusively on a television channel can now be streamed live on a website, clipped and posted to YouTube, discussed on X (formerly Twitter), and summarized in a podcast – all within minutes.

The concept gained academic prominence through Henry Jenkins, whose 2006 book Convergence Culture: Where Old and New Media Collide laid the groundwork for understanding this shift. Jenkins argued that convergence is not just a technological process – it is fundamentally a cultural one. It involves changes in how audiences seek, share, and interact with media content across multiple platforms. He identified three key pillars of convergence culture: media convergence (the flow of content across platforms), participatory culture (active audience engagement replacing passive consumption), and collective intelligence (communities pooling knowledge to create shared meaning).

This framework is essential for understanding television in the new media era because it explains why the medium did not die as many predicted. Instead, television adapted, merged with digital platforms, and found new ways to reach audiences.

The rise of OTT platforms and the end of appointment viewing

Over-the-top (OTT) platforms are services that deliver video content directly to viewers over the internet, bypassing traditional cable, satellite, or DTH infrastructure. Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ Hotstar, Hulu, HBO Max, and a growing list of regional platforms fall into this category. These services have fundamentally changed how people consume television content.

The most obvious shift is from scheduled viewing to on-demand access. Before OTT, if you missed a programme at its broadcast time, you simply missed it. Streaming removed that constraint entirely. Audiences can now watch what they want, when they want, and on whichever device they prefer – whether it is a smart TV, a laptop, a tablet, or a smartphone.

This shift has given rise to binge-watching as a dominant consumption pattern. Entire seasons of shows are released at once, encouraging viewers to watch multiple episodes in a single sitting. It has also changed how content is produced – writers and directors now often craft narratives that reward continuous viewing rather than weekly episode structures.

The global streaming landscape

The competition among streaming platforms – often called the streaming wars – has led to a massive boom in content production. Netflix, Amazon, Apple, Disney, and HBO have collectively invested billions of dollars in original programming, producing high-quality series and films that rival traditional cinema. This era is frequently described as a new “Golden Age of Television” because of the sheer volume and quality of content available.

The growth of Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television (FAST) services is another significant trend. These platforms offer curated, linear-style channels without subscription fees, attracting viewers who want free access and advertisers who want engaged audiences. At the same time, major streaming platforms are increasingly investing in localized content, partnering with regional studios and talent to serve diverse markets across the globe.

The Indian OTT revolution

India offers a striking case study in how OTT platforms reshape a national media landscape. The Indian OTT market has grown rapidly, driven by affordable smartphones, cheap mobile data (particularly after Jio’s entry in 2016), and a young, digitally native population. According to Statista, India’s OTT video market revenue is projected to reach approximately US$4.96 billion in 2026, with user numbers expected to touch 662 million by 2030.

Platforms like Disney+ Hotstar, ZEE5, SonyLIV, MX Player, JioCinema, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video compete fiercely for Indian viewers. A key factor in their success is the production of regional language content – India has over 1,600 spoken languages, and platforms that cater to local tastes in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Malayalam, and other languages have gained significant traction. This linguistic diversity has driven demand for content that traditional television channels, with their limited slots and broader programming, could not always fulfil.

How convergence has changed content consumption

The convergence of television and digital media has not just changed where people watch content – it has changed the entire experience of watching. Several key shifts define this new reality.

Device-agnostic viewing

Content is no longer tied to a single device. A viewer can start watching a documentary on a smart TV in the living room, pause it, and continue on a smartphone during a commute. This seamless, cross-device experience is now a baseline expectation. The content follows the user, not the other way around. As WTW notes, today’s consumers access media through a variety of platforms including the web, smartphones, tablets, and streaming-enabled televisions, and this multi-channel approach creates new revenue opportunities for media companies.

Personalisation through algorithms

OTT platforms use sophisticated AI-driven recommendation engines to personalise the viewing experience. By analysing a user’s watch history, search behaviour, and preferences, these algorithms suggest content that the viewer is likely to enjoy. Netflix, for example, has saved significant costs by using artificial intelligence to improve content recommendations and reduce subscriber churn. In 2025, these recommendation systems have become even more contextual, factoring in variables like time of day, viewing mood, and social signals.

The rise of second-screen behaviour

Audiences today frequently engage with multiple screens simultaneously. Someone watching a cricket match on television might simultaneously check live scores on a phone, read commentary on social media, and participate in online discussions. This second-screen behaviour has created new opportunities for broadcasters and advertisers to engage audiences across touchpoints, making the viewing experience more interactive and social.

Social media as a content discovery engine

Social media platforms have become a major driver of what people watch on television and streaming services. A 2025 Deloitte Digital Media Trends report found that a majority of Gen Z and millennial viewers consider social media content more relevant to them than traditional TV shows and movies. Many younger viewers discover new shows and films based on social media recommendations, making platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube critical for content promotion and audience building.

Traditional television’s response to digital disruption

Faced with the rise of OTT and digital media, traditional television has not simply faded away. Instead, it has adapted – sometimes effectively, sometimes not.

Hybrid models and digital extensions

Most major television networks now operate their own streaming apps and websites. Live news broadcasts, for instance, are simultaneously streamed online. Sports events are offered both on traditional cable and through digital platforms. Many broadcasters have adopted hybrid models that combine linear broadcasting with on-demand digital libraries, allowing them to retain existing audiences while attracting new, digitally oriented viewers.

NextGen TV (ATSC 3.0)

On the technology front, the rollout of ATSC 3.0, also known as NextGen TV, is bringing broadcast television closer to digital standards. This new broadcasting standard supports 4K resolution, immersive audio, targeted advertising, and interactive features. It is particularly valuable in areas with limited broadband infrastructure, where streaming may not be reliable. NextGen TV represents an effort by traditional broadcasters to compete with OTT platforms on technical quality and user experience.

The creator economy and television

An increasingly important development is the rise of the creator economy and its intersection with traditional TV. Social media creators – individuals who build large audiences on platforms like YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram – are now seen as legitimate competitors to traditional media. Some creators have crossed over into network television and streaming platforms, while others have built media empires entirely outside the traditional system. This blurring of lines between professional broadcast content and user-generated content is a direct consequence of media convergence.

Convergence beyond entertainment: news, education, and interactivity

The convergence of television and new media is not limited to entertainment. It extends into news, education, and interactive experiences.

Television news in the digital age

Television news channels now operate across multiple platforms. A breaking news story is simultaneously broadcast on TV, streamed on the channel’s app, shared as short clips on social media, and discussed in real-time on platforms like X and Reddit. Newsrooms increasingly use AI for real-time reporting, automated summarisation, and multilingual translation. This multi-platform approach means that television news is no longer consumed passively – audiences engage with it, share it, and even contribute to it through citizen journalism.

Interactive and immersive content

The boundaries of what counts as “television content” are expanding. Interactive storytelling formats – where viewers make choices that affect the plot – have been explored by platforms like Netflix (for instance, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch). Augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are being integrated into live events and branded content. As industry analysts note, immersive media experiences are expected to reshape not just entertainment but also education, tourism, and retail in the coming years.

Educational content and accessibility

Convergence has also made educational content far more accessible. What was once limited to a few educational TV channels is now available through platforms like YouTube, Coursera, and dedicated educational streaming apps. Students in remote areas can access lectures, documentaries, and tutorials that were previously unavailable to them. The merging of television and internet technology has democratised access to information on an unprecedented scale.

Challenges of the converged media landscape

While convergence has brought enormous benefits, it has also introduced challenges that media companies, regulators, and audiences must navigate.

Content overload and subscription fatigue

With dozens of streaming platforms competing for attention, viewers face an overwhelming number of choices. This abundance, while positive in theory, can lead to decision fatigue and subscription fatigue – the frustration of needing multiple paid subscriptions to access desired content. The average household may now need subscriptions to four or five platforms to cover their viewing preferences, raising questions about affordability and value.

Digital divide

The benefits of convergence are unevenly distributed. In countries like India, a significant rural population still lacks reliable internet access, making streaming services inaccessible. This digital divide means that while urban, tech-savvy audiences enjoy the full benefits of convergence, millions remain dependent on traditional broadcast television or have limited access to digital content altogether.

Privacy and data concerns

Personalisation relies on data collection. OTT platforms track viewing habits, search history, and user preferences to deliver tailored recommendations and targeted advertising. This raises concerns about data privacy, security, and surveillance. As WTW observes, cybersecurity is a critical risk in the converging media landscape, with companies increasingly vulnerable to data breaches and system hacking as they rely more heavily on digital platforms.

Regulatory complexity

The regulatory frameworks that governed traditional broadcasting do not always apply neatly to digital and OTT content. Issues like content censorship, copyright protection, and cross-border content distribution create legal complexities. In India, for example, the government introduced guidelines for OTT platforms under the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021, bringing streaming content under a self-regulatory framework for the first time.

The future: an integrated media ecosystem

Looking ahead, the distinction between “television” and “new media” is likely to dissolve entirely. The future points toward a single, integrated media ecosystem where content flows seamlessly across devices, platforms, and formats.

Smart TVs are already at the centre of this shift. A modern smart TV serves as a hub that blends live broadcasts, streaming services, gaming, social media, and even video calling into one interface. The expansion of 5G networks will further accelerate this integration by enabling high-definition, low-latency streaming on any device, anywhere. AI will continue to play a larger role – not just in recommending content, but in creating it, with generative AI tools assisting in scriptwriting, editing, and even production.

The concept of transmedia storytelling – where a single narrative unfolds across television, film, video games, social media, and other platforms, with each medium contributing something unique – is also set to grow. This approach, first theorised by Jenkins, turns audiences into active participants who piece together story elements from multiple sources rather than passively receiving them from one.

Television, in essence, has not died. It has evolved. It has broken free from the constraints of a single device and a fixed schedule, becoming more personal, more portable, and more deeply embedded in our digital lives than ever before.
