This migration is driven by a few key factors: widespread smartphone adoption (87% of adults now own smartphones), the expansion of affordable high-speed mobile data, and the growing presence of connected devices in homes and cars. Streaming platforms have become essential daily tools, and radio broadcasters who fail to establish a strong digital presence risk losing relevance.

The podcast revolution and its impact on radio

Podcasting has emerged as one of the most powerful forces reshaping the audio landscape. What was once a niche format has grown into a multi-billion-dollar industry. According to Grand View Research, the global podcasting market was valued at $30.72 billion in 2024 and is projected to reach $131.13 billion by 2030, growing at an annual rate of 27%. The number of global podcast listeners is expected to cross 619 million in 2026.

In the United States alone, over 55% of the population now listens to podcasts monthly. More than 70% of Americans have listened to at least one podcast, and the format is increasingly embedded in everyday routines – commutes, workouts, cooking, and more. Pew Research Center has noted that on-demand audio (including podcasts and streaming music) has overtaken linear audio like traditional radio when it comes to total listening time in the U.S.

Winning the in-car listener increasingly requires a strong digital presence and compelling, differentiated content.

AI and personalisation: making radio smarter

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a central tool in how radio content is produced, curated, and delivered. Broadcasters are already adopting AI-powered playlisting, mood-based content personalisation, and automated voiceovers to create more engaging listener experiences.

For internet radio stations and streaming platforms, AI enables something that traditional FM simply cannot offer: a listening experience tailored to each individual. Platforms like Spotify and iHeartRadio use algorithms to analyse listening habits and suggest personalised content, improving both user experience and listener retention. For smaller stations running on internet radio broadcasting software, AI tools are levelling the playing field by enabling sophisticated personalisation at minimal cost.

Behind the scenes, radio’s infrastructure is undergoing a fundamental transformation. The shift from traditional hardware-based studio setups to IP-based and cloud-powered workflows is one of the defining technical trends. Radio World highlights the example of RTL Belgium’s “Magenta project,” which removed nearly all traditional studio hardware in favour of a fully virtualised, software-driven production environment. Hosts log in via touchscreens, and everything from audio levels to playout configurations is automated and software-controlled.

The concept of “radio-in-a-bag” – a laptop with radio software, an I/O box, a couple of microphones, and headphones – allows high-quality radio shows to be produced from virtually anywhere over an IP connection. This flexibility was accelerated by the pandemic but has since become a permanent feature of how modern radio operates.

The European Broadcasting Union has published guidance emphasising the need for broader adoption of cloud technologies in broadcasting. Whether it’s a private data centre or a public cloud setup, the goal is the same: greater flexibility, lower hardware costs, and the ability to adapt to changing production needs at short notice.

Radio’s future is not just about what listeners hear – it’s about how they interact. The report positions local audio sellers as expanding into streaming, podcasts, and geotargeted digital inventory – a far cry from the traditional model of selling 30-second FM spots.

Visual radio and multi-format storytelling

The boundaries between radio, video, and social media content are dissolving rapidly. Many radio stations now livestream their shows on platforms like YouTube and Instagram, creating what’s often called visual radio. This multi-format approach serves several purposes: it extends reach beyond the traditional FM audience, creates additional content for social media, and provides advertisers with video-based inventory alongside audio placements.

The trend aligns with what’s happening in the podcast world, where video formats are the fastest-growing segment. For radio broadcasters, the message is clear – being an audio-only medium is no longer sufficient. Successful stations and hosts are becoming multi-platform content creators who deliver audio, video, and social content from the same production workflow.

While global platforms dominate the headlines, one of radio’s greatest advantages remains its deep connection to local communities. As mass media fragments and audiences scatter across countless digital platforms, hyperlocal content offers both audience loyalty and sustainable revenue – especially when paired with targeted digital advertising tools.

Immersive audio and next-generation technologies

Looking further ahead, emerging technologies like spatial audio, 5G broadcasting, and ATSC 3.0 promise to transform the listening experience itself. Spatial audio creates a three-dimensional soundscape that makes listeners feel like they’re inside the content rather than simply listening to it. Technologies like 5G Broadcast allow content to be transmitted using mobile network infrastructure without consuming individual data bandwidth, while ATSC 3.0 treats every broadcast stream as an IP packet – enabling seamless delivery across smart TVs, mobile apps, cars, and home devices.

Edge computing will further support these advancements by enabling real-time processing closer to the end user, reducing latency and allowing for more responsive, interactive audio experiences. Together, these technologies point toward a future where the distinction between “radio,” “streaming,” and “podcast” may become irrelevant – replaced by a unified, adaptive audio ecosystem that delivers the right content, in the right format, at the right moment.

Its core strengths remain unchanged: intimacy, accessibility, immediacy, and the ability to be consumed while doing other things. Audio is the most “eyes-free” medium available, which gives it a unique advantage in an age of screen fatigue.

In 2025, 85% of American adults aged 25-64 still tuned into radio weekly. Projections suggest that by 2026, AM/FM radio will surpass linear television in ratings among the key 25-54 age group. The medium isn’t just surviving – in many ways, it’s gaining strength by absorbing digital tools, expanding to new platforms, and meeting audiences where they already are.

The future of radio is not about replacing FM with the internet. It’s about a medium that has always been defined by the human voice, local relevance, and real-time connection – now equipped with powerful new tools to deliver those qualities to anyone, anywhere, on any device.
