When you listen to a professionally produced podcast or a radio drama, every voice is clear, the background music sits perfectly underneath the narration, and nothing feels too loud or too soft. That seamless listening experience does not happen by accident – it is the result of two interconnected audio processes: equalisation (EQ) and sound mixing. Together, they form the final and most critical stage of audio post-production, transforming a collection of raw recordings into a polished, broadcast-ready programme.

What is sound mixing?

Sound mixing is the process of combining multiple audio tracks into a single, balanced output. It involves layering and processing individual audio tracks – adjusting their volume levels, applying effects, and using various tools to ensure every element is heard clearly and contributes meaningfully to the whole. The finished product of a complete mixing process is called a mixdown. In a mixdown, dialogue, music, and sound effects are no longer separate files – they exist as a single, integrated audio programme.

Mixing sits at the start of post-production and is always followed by a distinct phase called mastering, where the stereo mixdown is fine-tuned for distribution and optimised for playback across different devices and formats. These are separate processes and should never be conflated – mixing shapes individual elements, while mastering addresses the overall tonal balance of the finished stereo file.

Why multi-track recording is the foundation of mixing

You cannot mix effectively without first recording on separate tracks. In multitrack recording, each audio source – voices, sound effects, or background music – is captured on its own independent track. This means each element can be individually adjusted, edited, or removed without affecting any other part of the recording.

The practical benefit is significant. If a guest’s voice is too soft in a podcast interview, it can be amplified on its own track without making the host louder. If there is unwanted noise on one channel, it can be isolated and corrected without disturbing anything else. Multitrack recording also enables post-production techniques like panning and stereo imaging, which create a more immersive audio experience for the listener.

Beyond technical convenience, multi-track recording gives the mix engineer precise control over spatial relationships between sounds. This is the key to stereo imaging – the ability to place sounds in a defined position within the left-right audio field.

Equalisation: shaping the frequency character of every track

Equalisation – or EQ – is the process of boosting or cutting the volume of specific frequencies in an audio signal to manipulate the overall tone of a recording. Every sound occupies a position within the audible frequency spectrum, which runs from 20 Hz (deep bass) to 20,000 Hz (very high treble). EQ allows an engineer to adjust how much energy exists at any point on that spectrum.

EQ is one of the central tools of the audio production process, and with a modest amount of knowledge and practice, it can go a very long way in improving the subjective quality of a broadcast. The two most common types used in production are the graphic equaliser, which uses fixed-frequency sliders for general tonal shaping, and the parametric equaliser (PEQ), which gives engineers precise control over the centre frequency, bandwidth, and gain of each adjustment – making it the standard choice in professional and broadcast environments.

EQ for music tracks

When mixing music, EQ delivers a balanced mix by adjusting specific frequencies, and for many producers, it forms the basis of entire mixing sessions. The goal is to ensure that no two instruments crowd the same frequency space. A bass guitar and a kick drum, for instance, both live in the low-frequency range – EQ is used to carve out distinct space for each so they are individually audible, rather than blurring into an indistinct low-end rumble. EQ can be used to reduce or boost levels at specific frequencies, such as bass or treble, creating a fuller, more balanced sound, and can also emphasise certain aspects of an instrument or vocal.

EQ for spoken word and podcasts

Voice EQ follows different priorities from music production. The human voice does not require a full frequency range – it needs warmth, clarity, and intelligibility. The range between 80-120 Hz provides the full, rich timbre of the voice – the very bottom of the chest register – and is critical for a warm, natural-sounding vocal. Frequencies below 80 Hz carry no useful vocal information and typically contain only low-end noise such as air conditioning rumble and mic handling thumps, so a high-pass filter is applied to cut them away.

The 2-3 kHz range adds clarity and gives shape to the fundamental frequencies of the voice, which is why it matters for intelligibility. Boosting this range modestly can bring speech forward in a mix. Meanwhile, the 300 Hz-1 kHz range tends to accumulate room reflections – reducing this area can make a recording feel less “boxy” and more controlled, especially for home studio recordings.

There is no single best EQ setting that applies universally to all voices, because each person’s resonant frequency – the natural frequency produced by their voice box – varies. A deep male voice will need different treatment from a high female voice, and both will differ from the sound of a child’s voice. EQ must always be applied by listening critically and adjusting for the individual track, not by applying a preset and walking away.

Stereo imaging and panning: giving sounds a position in space

One of the defining characteristics of a professional mix is the sense of space it creates. Stereo imaging is the perceived spatial location of sound sources within a track – essentially the “room” in which the audio is playing. Panning is the primary tool used to create this spatial placement. When you pan a sound, you decide where it sits in the stereo image, giving it a specific location ranging from the far left to the centre and over to the far right.

In a typical music mix, the lead vocal, kick drum, and bass are kept at the centre of the stereo field because they anchor the listener’s attention. Other elements – rhythm guitars, backing vocals, percussion – are panned left or right to create width and prevent elements from masking each other. Counterbalance panning is a key principle here: for each element panned to one side, another should be positioned in the opposite direction to maintain overall balance.

In spoken word production – such as a podcast with multiple hosts or a radio drama with several characters – panning serves a different narrative function. Placing different voices at slightly different positions in the stereo field makes them more distinguishable from one another, reducing listener fatigue in longer programmes. It also reinforces the sense of physical space in dramatised audio productions, helping audiences follow the scene.

Mixing for spoken word programmes: beyond music

Sound mixing is not exclusively the domain of music production. In radio drama, documentary podcasts, and audio quiz programmes, mixing is just as important – and arguably more nuanced. The engineer must balance multiple layers simultaneously: the voices of different performers, the ambient soundscape of a scene, and background music that supports mood without overwhelming dialogue.

Effective compression is essential for maintaining listener engagement, especially in genres that rely heavily on spoken word, such as informative podcasts or audiobooks, because it makes speech more uniform and easier to follow. In a radio drama, a background music bed needs to sit several decibels below the voices at all times – but it should not disappear. The mix engineer rides these levels so that music builds tension in quiet moments, recedes when dialogue becomes intense, and swells again at dramatic transitions.

Podcasts with better sound quality tend to retain listenership far more effectively than those with poor audio, underscoring that audio quality is not merely a technical consideration – it directly affects audience retention and programme credibility.

Creating an integrated audio blend: the goal of mixing

The ultimate aim of mixing is not simply to make things louder or quieter. It is to create a final output where all components exist in a coherent, aesthetic relationship with one another. The goal of mixing is to ensure that all elements of the audio blend harmoniously and suit the intended aesthetic or production requirements.

Mixing is similar to sculpting – it shapes the audio by removing or limiting what is unnecessary while highlighting the most artistically compelling elements. Volume automation, where levels are adjusted dynamically over time rather than set at a fixed point, plays an important role here. Recording volume changes throughout a programme ensures that vocals blend perfectly with the rest of the elements, helps control energy, and delivers the content’s message more effectively.

A well-executed mix also ensures the programme translates consistently across different playback environments – whether the listener is on studio monitors, earbuds, a car stereo, or a phone speaker. A good mix begins at the recording stage, and what is recorded has a huge influence on how smoothly the mixing session will proceed. No amount of EQ or level adjustment can fully compensate for audio that was poorly captured to begin with. Professional audio balance, then, is a chain: careful recording, informed equalisation, precise level control, thoughtful panning, and finally, a mix that brings it all together into a single, unified listening experience.
