Every polished podcast episode you’ve ever heard – the crisp interview, the immersive audio drama, the live music performance – started at the same place: a recording session. Pre-production does the thinking; production does the work. This is the stage where scripts come alive, voices are captured, and the raw material of your programme is laid down for the first time. Getting it right here is everything, because as any experienced producer will tell you, a flawed recording is like a blurry photograph – you can try to fix it later, but it will never be as sharp as getting it right at the source.

From planning to action: the transition into production
Pre-production is the blueprint stage – research, scripting, casting, and rehearsals. Once that groundwork is done, the programme formally enters the production stage, which is simply the period when actual recording takes place. This transition is not casual. Before a single microphone goes live, the producer is responsible for a thorough equipment check. Microphones, headphones, mixing consoles, recording software, talkback systems, and signal routing must all be verified. A fault discovered mid-session wastes time, disrupts the talent, and can cost you a clean take that may be impossible to recreate.
The producer also ensures that all contributors – hosts, voice actors, musicians, engineers – are briefed, positioned correctly, and ready. In audio production, the control room and the live room serve distinct functions: the engineer and producer manage levels and monitoring from the control room, while the talent performs in the acoustically designed recording space. Communication between these two zones typically happens through a talkback system – a button on the console that lets the producer speak into the performer’s headphones without that conversation being picked up by the recording microphone.
Why the recording environment matters so much
Before looking at specific studio types, it is worth understanding why the physical space is so critical. Recording studios are carefully designed around the principles of room acoustics to create spaces with the precise acoustic properties needed to capture sound accurately. This involves both soundproofing – preventing outside noise from entering – and acoustic treatment, which controls what happens to sound inside the room by using absorption and diffusion materials on the walls, ceiling, and floor.
Soundproofing and acoustic treatment are two different things that work together. Empty spaces often make poor recording environments because they generate a lot of reverb. Hard surfaces like bare walls, wooden floors, and large tables bounce sound waves around, creating echo and flutter that muddies a recording. Soft surfaces – carpet, fabric furniture, acoustic panels – absorb those reflections and produce the controlled, “dry” sound that gives engineers the cleanest possible starting point. A basic microphone in a quiet, well-treated room can often produce more professional results than expensive gear in an echo-prone space.
Types of recording studios
Not every programme is recorded in the same kind of space. The acoustic requirements for a news talk show, a live music performance, and a full-cast audio drama are fundamentally different. Production studios should be designed to meet the specific needs of their content and be flexible enough to accommodate different productions day to day. Broadly, audio programmes are recorded in three specialist studio environments: the talk studio, the music studio, and the drama studio.
The talk studio
The talk studio is the workhorse of audio production. It is the environment used for interviews, news bulletins, discussion programmes, and most podcast formats. Its defining characteristic is voice clarity. The room is typically compact and heavily treated with acoustic panels that absorb sound reflections, producing a very “dead” or dry acoustic environment. Compact spaces work best for talk recording because audio doesn’t get mixed in – the microphone picks up the voice directly, without the colouring effect of room reflections.
The layout of a talk studio prioritises communication. The studio gives the presenter a clear line of sight to guests, making it a better solution for talk or news-based production. Most professional talk studios are built around a broadcasting desk – often in a U-shape – so that the host and multiple guests can all face each other and access their microphones comfortably. Sound isolation is especially critical for live talk segments, phone interviews, and voice tracking, so walls, floors, and ceilings are all acoustically treated. The goal is a neutral, interference-free environment where every spoken word is captured with maximum intelligibility.
The music studio
A music recording studio is a fundamentally different environment from a talk studio – and deliberately so. Recording studios range in size from a small in-home project studio large enough to record a single singer-guitarist, to a large building with space for a full orchestra of 100 or more musicians. The key difference from a talk studio is that music studios are larger, and they are designed to allow a degree of natural reverberation rather than eliminating it entirely.
Reverberation – the persistence of sound after the original source has stopped – is what gives a musical performance its sense of space and warmth. Bigger spaces are ideal for vocal songs because of the room’s acoustics. A music studio achieves a careful balance: it must be large enough to accommodate multiple performers and instruments, while still maintaining enough acoustic control so that each instrument can be captured cleanly when needed. This is why major recording studios typically have a live room equipped with microphones, a separate control room where engineers operate mixing consoles and monitor speakers, and smaller isolation booths to accommodate loud instruments such as drums or electric guitar amplifiers – keeping those sounds from bleeding into microphones capturing other instruments.
The producer’s role in a music session requires close coordination with the sound engineer. Levels must be monitored in real time, and decisions about microphone placement – close-miking for direct capture, room miking for ambience – directly affect the character of the final recording.
The drama studio
The drama studio is the most complex and specialised of the three environments. An audio drama – sometimes called a radio play – must construct an entire world using only sound: dialogue, music, and effects. The studio has to accommodate all of these elements simultaneously, along with multiple actors who may need to move around the space as part of their performance.
Unlike a talk studio, which is optimised for static voice capture, a drama studio must allow for movement, varying actor distances from the microphone, and the creation of live sound effects. In a well-designed drama studio, directors coach actors to vary their proximity, breath, and energy rather than overstate emotion – subtle shifts in microphone distance can signal movement or distance between characters far more effectively than theatrical projection.
A critical element of drama production is sound effects, and specifically the craft of Foley. What is now called Foley originated as a technique for adding sounds to live broadcasts of radio drama in the early 1920s, when pre-recorded effects were not reliable enough to reproduce sounds on cue. In radio sound effects work, artists handle every sound heard in a show – from footsteps to explosions to weather – producing these sounds either manually, by handling objects and mechanical devices, or by triggering pre-recorded sounds, all in real time, coordinating with the actors and any live musicians throughout the production.
A practical workflow for drama recording involves capturing clean dialogue first, then recording Foley in short passes aligned to the script. Foley artists recreate immersive sounds using unexpected methods – a leather jacket rustle can suggest movement, footsteps can signal urgency before a line is spoken, and these sounds are not decorative; they help the listener track action and place. The drama studio must therefore be stocked with props and have enough open floor space for actors and Foley artists to perform physical actions without crowding each other or the microphones.
The producer’s role during recording
Regardless of the studio type, the producer remains the central figure throughout the recording session. Their responsibilities during production are both technical and creative. On the technical side, they monitor recording levels to ensure the signal is clean and strong without distorting, coordinate with the engineer on microphone placement and signal routing, and call for retakes when a performance or a technical element falls short. On the creative side, they direct performances – guiding a voice actor toward a more natural read, asking a guest to slow down for clarity, or shaping the pacing of a talk segment.
Hosts, producers, and guests should have easy access to controls, clear sightlines to each other, and acoustically isolated environments for uninterrupted recording. A well-run session moves with purpose: there is a clear start time, a session plan, and a culture of discipline around noise discipline – phones silenced, no unnecessary movement during takes, and a respect for the red “Recording” light outside the studio door, which signals to everyone in the building that a live session is in progress.
When the studio is not enough: outside broadcasts
Some programmes cannot be made inside a studio. The story is at the stadium, the concert hall, or the site of a breaking news event. In these cases, the production stage moves to what is called an Outside Broadcast (OB) – any recording or live transmission that takes place away from the station’s main facility. An OB team takes portable recording equipment into the field and faces challenges that a controlled studio simply does not have: variable background noise, weather, unpredictable acoustics, and limited ability to retake a moment.
Home recording focuses on capturing the conversation itself; studio production focuses on shaping the entire experience around that conversation. The same principle applies to OB versus studio recording – the studio is where you have complete control; outside is where you capture authenticity and atmosphere at the cost of that control. Both have a place in audio production, and a skilled producer knows which environment serves the programme best.
A clean recording is everything
The production stage, whatever environment it takes place in, is where the quality of your programme is fundamentally set. Post-production can edit out a stumble, reduce background noise, and balance levels – but it cannot turn a technically poor recording into a great one. The investment of time in checking equipment before the session starts, choosing the right studio environment for the type of content, and maintaining discipline throughout the recording session pays dividends across every stage that follows. The material you bring out of the studio is the raw clay from which the final programme is shaped.
