Every day, without realising it, you decode hundreds of signs – the red traffic light that tells you to stop, the smell of rain before it falls, the skull-and-crossbones warning on a bottle. But how exactly do these signs work? Why does a red octagon mean “stop” while a photograph of a fire means something completely different? The answer lies in a foundational idea in semiotics: the classification of signs into icons, indexes, and symbols. Developed through the complementary work of Swiss linguist Ferdinand de Saussure and American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce, this classification reveals how meaning is built, shared, and interpreted in every act of communication.

The foundation: what is a sign?

Before classifying signs, it helps to understand what a sign actually is. According to Saussure, a sign is a two-sided entity – a signifier (the physical form, such as a spoken word or image) and a signified (the mental concept it represents). Critically, Saussure argued that the bond between signifier and signified is arbitrary – there is no natural reason why the sequence of letters in “tree” connects to the concept of a tree. That link is entirely a product of social convention.

Peirce took this framework further. Where Saussure described a two-part (dyadic) sign, Peirce proposed a triadic model: a sign has a representamen (the signifying form), an object (what it stands for), and an interpretant (the meaning generated in the mind of the observer). This third element – the interpretant – was Peirce’s most significant innovation. It recognises that meaning is not fixed in the sign itself; it is always mediated through interpretation. A sign, in Peirce’s view, only functions as a sign when someone interprets it as standing for something else.

From this triadic structure, Peirce developed what he called the most fundamental division of signs: icons, indexes, and symbols – classified according to the nature of the relationship between the representamen and its object.

Icons: signs that resemble what they represent

An icon is a sign where the signifier physically resembles the thing it represents. Icons signify by means of similarity between the sign and its object. The closer the resemblance, the more immediately the sign is understood – no prior cultural knowledge is required to interpret it.

A photograph is the clearest example of an iconic sign. When you photograph a tree, the image looks like that tree. The resemblance is direct and perceptual. Similarly, a portrait painting, a map of a city, or a realistic illustration of a human heart in a medical textbook are all iconic signs. As noted in the context of design, even early computer interfaces relied heavily on iconic signs – the trash can icon resembles an actual trash can, making its function immediately legible to new users without any instruction.

The key strength of the icon is accessibility. Because it depends on visual or sensory likeness rather than learned conventions, iconic signs cross linguistic and cultural boundaries more easily than other types. Road signs depicting a pedestrian walking, or an airplane on an airport signboard, communicate their meaning to someone who has never encountered them before.

Icons in media and visual communication

In journalism and mass communication, iconic signs are everywhere. Documentary photographs carry iconic weight: an image of a flood communicates devastation not through convention but through direct visual resemblance to the reality it depicts. Infographics, diagrams, and visual metaphors in news design are heavily reliant on iconicity. However, even apparently straightforward iconic signs are never entirely innocent – a photograph is also a selection, a framing, and a moment frozen out of context, which means its interpretation is always shaped by the surrounding symbolic system.

Indexes: signs connected by cause or proximity

An index is a sign that points to its object not through resemblance but through a direct, factual, or causal relationship. Indexes signify by means of a direct relation of contiguity or causality between the sign and what it represents. The sign does not look like its object – it is caused by it, or is physically associated with it.

Smoke is an index of fire. The smoke doesn’t resemble fire; it is produced by fire. A thermometer reading is an index of temperature. Paw prints in mud are an index of an animal having passed through. The dark clouds gathering before a storm are an index of rain. In each case, the sign and its object are connected by a real-world, physical relationship – not by cultural agreement or visual similarity.

Peirce was clear that signs in real-world use rarely exist in pure form. By 1903, he recognised that it would be difficult to find any completely pure icon or index – most signs combine elements of more than one category. A photograph, for instance, is both iconic (it resembles its subject) and indexical (it is physically caused by light bouncing off the subject onto photosensitive film or a digital sensor). This insight is particularly important for journalists and researchers analysing media texts.

Indexical signs in everyday communication

In communication contexts, indexical signs are especially significant for non-verbal and sensory meaning. A person’s red face can index embarrassment or exertion. A cracked screen on a phone indexes a fall or impact. In broadcasting, sounds used in audio production – thunder, a ticking clock, the murmur of a crowd – function indexically, connecting the listener to an environment through causal association. Medical diagnosis is heavily indexical: symptoms are signs that point toward an underlying condition, not through resemblance but through causal relationship.

Symbols: signs governed by convention

A symbol is a sign in which the relationship between signifier and signified is entirely arbitrary – established by social convention and cultural agreement rather than by any physical resemblance or causal connection. According to Peirce, a symbol is constituted as a sign by the fact that it is used and understood as such – it must be learned. This aligns directly with Saussure’s concept of the arbitrary sign: there is no intrinsic reason why the word “stop” or the colour red on a traffic light should carry the meanings they do. These meanings are products of historical convention, agreed upon by a community of users.

Language itself is the most extensive system of symbolic signs. Words are symbols – the spoken or written sequence “dog” has no visual or causal relationship with the animal it refers to. Different languages use entirely different signifiers for the same concept, which confirms that the relationship is not natural but conventional. As Saussure argued, although the sign may seem arbitrarily chosen, within a language community it is imposed by tradition – no individual can unilaterally alter it.

Other examples of symbols include national flags, religious icons, mathematical notation, and brand logos. The peace symbol, the dollar sign, the cross – none of these resemble or are causally connected to what they represent. Their meanings are purely the product of collective, historical agreement.

Why symbols are the most complex sign type

Symbols carry the heaviest interpretive burden of the three sign types. Unlike icons and indexes, they are entirely dependent on the interpreter knowing the code – the shared social or cultural framework that assigns meaning to the form. This is why translation between cultures is so complex. Saussure emphasised that the same concept is denoted by entirely different signifiers across languages, further proof that the relationship is learned and conventional. In communication research, understanding which signs are symbolic is essential for analysing how media, advertising, and political messaging construct meaning – and for whom those meanings are accessible.

Saussure and Peirce: two frameworks, one insight

Saussure and Peirce approached semiotics from different directions but arrived at complementary insights. Saussure, working from linguistics, was primarily interested in the structure of sign systems – how signs derive meaning from their relationships with other signs rather than from any direct connection to reality. His arbitrariness principle laid the groundwork for understanding symbolic signs. Peirce, working from philosophy and logic, was interested in how signs represent their objects – which led him to the icon/index/symbol trichotomy as a way of capturing the different mechanisms through which signs convey meaning.

The Chicago School of Media Theory notes that Peirce developed this trichotomy as one component of a far more complex formal system – his full typology eventually grew to more than 66 classes of signs. But for most practical purposes in communication research and media analysis, the icon/index/symbol triad remains the most widely used and analytically powerful tool. It directs analysts to ask a precise question about any sign they encounter: does this sign work through resemblance, through causal connection, or through convention?

Signs rarely work alone

One of the most important practical insights from Peirce’s classification is that a single sign often functions as more than one type simultaneously. Peirce himself acknowledged that pure instances of any single type are rare in practice. A photograph is iconic in that it resembles its subject, indexical in that it is physically produced by the light from that subject, and can become symbolic if it is used within a cultural code – as when certain photographs become iconic symbols of historical events.

A national flag is primarily symbolic (its colours and shapes carry no natural meaning), but it can acquire indexical significance – a flag at half-mast is an index of mourning. Understanding this layering is critical for media professionals: every text, image, broadcast segment, or campaign deploys combinations of sign types, and a reader or viewer brings all three interpretive frameworks to bear at once. Semiotic analysis, rooted in Peirce’s classification, offers a systematic way to unpack this complexity.
