When you encounter a potential source, reading it in full before deciding whether it belongs in your review is an inefficient use of time. The five core criteria for evaluating any source

City University of Hong Kong’s library research guide on literature reviews identifies accuracy, authority, objectivity, currency, and coverage as the five foundational criteria for evaluating information from any source. These aren’t abstract concepts – each one translates into specific questions a researcher should ask before citing a source.

Currency: is this source still timely?

Currency refers to how recent the source is relative to your research topic. A useful rule of thumb is that sources in fast-moving fields like medicine, science, and technology should generally have been published within the last five years, while topics in history or the humanities can often accommodate sources up to ten years old. That said, a decades-old publication date does not automatically disqualify a source – some foundational theoretical works retain their relevance regardless of age. Authority: who is behind the source?

Authority concerns the credentials and institutional standing of the author or the publishing body. An accurate source supports its claims with evidence, data, and references to other scholarly works. The special challenge of online sources

Broad-to-specific and other hybrid approaches

Not every review fits neatly into one of the three main categories.
