For most of human history, sending a message over a long distance meant physically carrying it – by foot, by horse, or by ship. A letter from London to New York could take weeks. News of a battle might arrive days after it was over. Then, within roughly a century, four inventions shattered these limitations forever: the telegraph, the telephone, radio, and television. Together, they formed the electronic revolution in communication, fundamentally rewiring how societies share information, connect with each other, and experience the world.

The telegraph: sending words at the speed of electricity
Before the telegraph, the fastest way to send a message across a long distance was through optical systems like semaphore towers or, simply, a fast rider on horseback. The electric telegraph changed everything. It was the first technology to transmit information almost instantly over vast distances using electrical signals sent through wires.
The idea of using electricity for communication had been floating around since the early 1700s. But it was Samuel Morse, a professor at New York University, who turned the concept into a practical system. He began developing his version of the telegraph in 1832 and created a coded alphabet of dots and dashes – now known as Morse Code – by 1835. After years of lobbying, he secured funding from the U.S. Congress and built a telegraph line from Washington, D.C. to Baltimore. On May 24, 1844, he transmitted the famous first message: “What hath God wrought?”
How the telegraph changed society
The impact was immediate and far-reaching. Western Union completed the first transcontinental telegraph line in 1861, and soon after, submarine cables began connecting continents. By the turn of the 20th century, long-distance communication depended heavily on the telegraph.
The telegraph reshaped business, journalism, and even warfare. Stock prices, news headlines, and military orders could now travel in minutes instead of days. Newspapers could report on events happening far away, almost as they happened. It also sparked bold predictions that sound remarkably similar to what people later said about the internet – that it would shrink the world, foster peace between nations, and make older forms of communication obsolete.
But the telegraph had a clear limitation: it could only send coded signals, not the human voice. Communication was still filtered through trained operators and a coded language. The next leap was about making wires carry speech itself.
The telephone: giving communication a voice
The telephone grew directly out of the telegraph’s technology. As inventors worked on ways to send multiple telegraph messages simultaneously over a single wire, they stumbled upon something far more powerful – the ability to transmit the human voice electrically.
Alexander Graham Bell is the most widely credited inventor of the telephone, receiving the first U.S. patent for the device in 1876. However, the history is more complicated. Italian innovator Antonio Meucci developed a voice-communication device as early as 1849, and Elisha Gray filed a similar patent just hours after Bell. The resulting legal battles became one of the most famous patent disputes in history.
What made Bell’s achievement on March 10, 1876, so significant was not just the technical feat. As the Library of Congress notes, Bell’s demonstration that people could “talk with electricity” rendered the quest for a faster telegraph almost irrelevant. Why send coded dots and dashes when you could simply speak?
Rapid adoption and societal impact
The telephone spread quickly. By 1880, nearly 50,000 telephones were in use in the United States. By 1905, that number had surged to 2.2 million. The transcontinental telephone line began operating in 1915, and AT&T – formed in 1885 from the merger of Bell’s companies – dominated the industry for the next century.
The telephone transformed daily life in ways the telegraph never could. It was a personal communication tool. A doctor could be called in an emergency. A manager could speak directly with a factory floor. Family members in different cities could share news in real time. Journalists could call their stories into the newsroom minutes before a paper went to print.
Interestingly, early reactions to the telephone mirrored what people later said about the internet. As documented by Elon University’s Imagining the Internet project, people predicted the telephone would advance democracy, allow social decentralization, change marketing and politics, and even foster world peace. They also worried it would increase crime and disrupt established social norms.
Despite early scepticism – one famous (possibly apocryphal) story has Western Union dismissing Bell’s invention as “idiotic” – the telephone became an indispensable part of modern life within 50 years of its creation.
Radio: from wires to wireless
Both the telegraph and the telephone relied on physical wires to carry their signals. Radio broke free of that constraint entirely. It used invisible electromagnetic waves to transmit sound through the air – no cables required.
The scientific groundwork was laid in the 1860s when James Clerk Maxwell theorised that electromagnetic waves could travel at the speed of light. In the late 1880s, German physicist Heinrich Hertz proved this experimentally. Then Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi turned theory into practice, building the first practical wireless communication system. By 1901, he had transmitted the first signal across the Atlantic Ocean.
From wireless telegraph to broadcast medium
Marconi’s early system was essentially a wireless telegraph – it could send Morse code, but not voice or music. The breakthrough came on Christmas Eve, 1906, when Canadian physicist Reginald Fessenden sent the first long-distance audio transmission from Brant Rock, Massachusetts. Sailors listening to their Morse code equipment were stunned to hear a human voice and violin music.
The real transformation happened in the 1920s. On November 2, 1920, station KDKA in Pittsburgh made its debut broadcast, reporting the results of the Harding-Cox presidential election. This is widely considered the birth of commercial radio broadcasting. The public response was explosive. By 1922, there were 576 licensed radio broadcasters in the United States. Universities offered radio courses, churches broadcast services, and newspapers created tie-ins with radio programmes.
Radio’s golden age and cultural power
The period from the late 1920s to the early 1950s is known as the Golden Age of Radio. Comedies, dramas, variety shows, and music programmes drew millions of listeners. Radio became the first truly electronic mass medium – unlike the telegraph or telephone, which were point-to-point, radio enabled point-to-multipoint communication, reaching millions of people simultaneously.
This gave radio enormous political and cultural influence. U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt used his famous “Fireside Chats” to speak directly to a nation struggling through the Great Depression, creating a sense of intimacy that print media could never achieve. During World War II, reporters like Edward R. Murrow broadcast live from London during the Blitz, bringing the sounds and reality of the war into American living rooms.
Radio also demonstrated the raw power of broadcast media in unexpected ways. In 1938, Orson Welles’ dramatisation of War of the Worlds – formatted as a series of fake news bulletins about a Martian invasion – reportedly caused widespread panic among listeners who believed it was real.
Beyond news and politics, radio reshaped consumer culture. It became one of the first media to rely on advertising as a revenue model, with businesses sponsoring programmes and eventually producing their own shows. This connection between media content and commercial sponsorship would become the dominant business model for all broadcast media that followed.
Television: adding sight to sound
If the telegraph sent text, the telephone sent voice, and radio broadcast sound to the masses, then television completed the progression by adding moving images. It became the first medium to deliver both audio and visual content directly into homes.
The concept of “seeing at a distance” had been imagined by writers like Jules Verne and H.G. Wells long before the technology existed. As Britannica notes, television was originally conceived as a medium for education and interpersonal communication. It eventually became a powerful broadcast medium modelled on radio.
The invention of television
Television development involved two competing approaches: mechanical and electronic systems. British inventor John Logie Baird pioneered the mechanical approach, giving the world’s first public demonstration of a television system in London in 1926. He used rotating disks to scan images into electrical impulses.
The electronic approach proved more viable. American inventor Philo Farnsworth developed the first fully electronic television system in 1927, at the age of just 21. Meanwhile, Vladimir Zworykin, working for RCA, developed a competing electronic system. RCA’s corporate backing gave it the commercial edge, leading to large-scale manufacturing and broadcasting infrastructure.
Commercial television broadcasts began in the late 1930s, but World War II slowed its growth as resources were diverted to the war effort. The real boom came after the war. American TV ownership soared – from just 9% of households in 1950 to 87% by 1960. In less than a decade, television went from a novelty to a household fixture.
Television’s societal impact
Television’s effect on society was profound and multidimensional. It reshaped entertainment, turning families into nightly audiences gathered around the screen. It transformed news consumption – people no longer just read about events; they watched them unfold. Major networks like NBC, CBS, and ABC became dominant cultural institutions.
Key moments in history became shared national – and eventually global – experiences through television. The coverage of the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, the Kennedy assassination, the Moon landing, and countless other events shaped public opinion in ways no previous medium could. Television united millions of people in shared experiences of both tragedy and triumph.
Television also became a massive engine for advertising. Businesses discovered that visual commercials were far more persuasive than radio ads, and TV advertising quickly became the primary revenue model for the industry. This, in turn, influenced everything from consumer behaviour to political campaigning. The famous 1960 Kennedy-Nixon presidential debate demonstrated just how powerful television’s visual component was – those who watched on TV thought Kennedy won, while radio listeners favoured Nixon.
The cumulative effect: a connected world
What makes the electronic revolution so remarkable is not just any single invention, but how each one built on the last. The telegraph proved that electrical signals could carry information over long distances. The telephone showed that those signals could carry the human voice. Radio freed communication from physical wires and introduced the concept of broadcasting to mass audiences. Television added the visual dimension, creating the most immersive medium the world had ever seen.
Each step expanded who could be reached, how quickly, and with what richness of information. The telegraph served businesses, governments, and the press. The telephone brought instant communication into homes and offices. Radio made it possible for one voice to reach millions simultaneously. Television brought distant events to life in people’s living rooms.
Together, these four inventions laid the foundation for the communication infrastructure we rely on today. Every subsequent technology – from satellites to the internet to the smartphone – is a direct descendant of the principles and networks first established by these electronic pioneers. They didn’t just change how we communicate; they changed how we understand the world around us, how we form communities, how we consume entertainment, and how political power is exercised.
The electronic revolution was, in every sense, the revolution that made the modern connected world possible.
