We like to think of ourselves as rational, logical beings, especially when we learn or make decisions. We weigh the options, we think through problems, and we consciously decide to change our behaviour. But what if I told you that a huge part of your learning happens “mindlessly,” without your direct awareness? And what if I said that some of the most complex skills you’ve learned didn’t come from a textbook, but from simply watching someone else? Learning, it turns out, is not as straightforward as sitting in a classroom. Itโs a messy, fascinating process filled with complex debates. Two of the biggest puzzles for psychologists and marketers alike are the role of consciousness in learning and the almost magical power of learning by observing.

For decades, this question has been at the heart of learning theory. On one side, you have the idea of learning as a very deliberate, conscious process. You study for an exam, you practice a musical instrument, you actively listen to instructions. You are Gentoo of your learning. On the other side is a more unsettling idea: that much of what we learn is automatic, a non-conscious process that happens in the background. This debate is crucial for understanding everything from how we form habits to why certain advertisements are so effective.
The case for ‘mindless’ learning
Have you ever found yourself humming a jingle for a product you don’t even use? Or feeling a sense of trust for a brand simply because you’ve seen its logo repeatedly? This is the power of non-conscious learning. This idea is rooted in behavioural theories like classical conditioning. You might remember Pavlov and his dogs, but this concept is a powerful force in our everyday lives.
Think about the promptโs example: a toothpaste ad featuring an actor in a doctorโs white coat. On a conscious level, you probably know that person is an actor. You know they aren’t a real dentist. And yet, your brain has been trained for years to associate white coats with authority, expertise, and medical trust. The advertiser is pairing their neutral product (the toothpaste) with a symbol that triggers an automatic positive response (the doctor). Over time, your positive feelings for the ‘doctor’ can transfer to the brand, all without you ever making a conscious decision about it. This is often called implicit learning, picking up on patterns and associations without even realizing you’re doing it.
Our brains are designed to be efficient. They create mental shortcuts to avoid having to analyze every single piece of information we encounter. These non-conscious processes are always running in the background, a bit like your computer’s operating system. They handle tasks like pattern recognition and forming associations, freeing up your conscious mind to focus on bigger problems. So, while you’re busy comparing prices, your non-conscious mind might be getting swayed by the happy, upbeat music in the store, associating those good feelings with the brand in your cart.
But is it really that simple? The cognitive twist
For a long time, behaviourists believed this automatic conditioning was just a simple reflex. Stimulus in, response out. However, modern theorists now argue that it’s not that simple. They believe that even in basic conditioning, cognitive factors-thoughts, expectations, and awareness-play a critical role. Learning isn’t just mindless; our brains are actively trying to figure out the world.
Let’s go back to Pavlovโs dogs. The newer perspective suggests the dog didn’t just learn to drool at the bell. The dog learned to *expect* food. The bell became more than a trigger; it became a predictive signal. The dog learned that the bell *means* food is coming. This element of expectation is a cognitive process. Itโs a thought, not just a reflex.
Now, apply this to the toothpaste ad. The conditioning is much more effective if, on some level, your brain forms an expectation. You don’t just associate the doctor with the toothpaste; you form a cognitive link that this toothpaste (thanks to the “expert”) will lead to a specific outcome, like better dental health or whiter teeth. You are “aware” of the connection, even if it’s just on the edge of your consciousness. This is why modern advertising doesn’t just show a product; it shows a problem being solved. It taps into your cognitive ability to learn, “If I use this, then I will get that result.” So, while some learning is automatic, many theorists argue that itโs rarely 100% mindless. There’s almost always a flicker of cognition involved.
Learning by looking: The power of modeling
The second major complex issue in learning is that we don’t always have to learn by doing. We don’t need to get an electric shock ourselves to learn not to stick a fork in an outlet. We can learn by watching someone else do it. This is called observational learning, or more famously, modeling. Itโs the idea that we learn by watching other people (models) and observing the consequences they receive for their behaviour.
This theory was championed by psychologist Albert Bandura, who argued that it’s a highly complex cognitive process. It’s not just simple imitation or “monkey see, monkey do.” For true observational learning to occur, four specific conditions must be met. If any one of these is missing, the learning likely won’t happen, or at least the behaviour won’t be performed.
Step 1: Attention (You have to actually watch)
This seems obvious, but itโs a critical first step. We are surrounded by billions of behaviours every day. We don’t learn from all of them because we simply don’t pay attention to them. For a behaviour to be learned, we must first direct our attention to the model.
What makes us pay attention? The model’s characteristics are key. We are more likely to pay attention to models we find attractive, prestigious, or powerful (like a celebrity, a boss, or a popular influencer). We also pay more attention to models we perceive as being similar to us-in age, gender, or interests. This is why a teenage boy wanting to learn skateboarding will pay intense attention to a video of a pro skater, but might completely ignore a video of a pro golfer.
Step 2: Retention (You have to remember it)
Watching is not enough. You might pay close attention to a chef masterfully julienning a carrot, but if you can’t remember what you saw two hours later, you haven’t learned it. Retention is the ability to store the observed behaviour in your memory. This isn’t just a vague memory; itโs about forming a mental representation of the action. We do this by creating mental images (visualizing the chef’s hand movements) or by using verbal descriptions (muttering to ourselves, “rocking motion, keep the fingertips curled back”). The better we can rehearse and store this information, the more likely we are to be able to access it later.
Step 3: Reproduction (You have to be able to do it)
Hereโs a big hurdle. You can pay perfect attention to an Olympic gymnast. You can remember every flip and twist. But can you *do* it? Reproduction is the ability to translate the mental images and verbal descriptions from your memory into your own physical actions. This step depends entirely on your own capabilities. You might remember the chef’s technique, but you may lack the knife skills and motor coordination to reproduce it safely or accurately. A behaviour is only learned if the observer can physically perform it. For many complex skills, this step requires practice, where we try to match our actions to our stored mental image.
Step 4: Motivation (You have to *want* to do it)
This is arguably the most important step. You might pay attention to a coworker who gossips, remember exactly what they said, and be perfectly capable of repeating that gossip yourself. But you don’t. Why? You lack the motivation.
Bandura explained that motivation is the bridge between learning and performing. Just because you *learned* something doesn’t mean you’ll *do* it. The motivation to perform the behaviour comes from observing the consequences for the model. This is known as vicarious reinforcement. If you see the model rewarded for their behaviour (e.g., the influencer gets praise and free products for their video), you will be motivated to perform that behaviour. If you see them punished (e.g., the gossiping coworker is reprimanded), you will be motivated *not* to perform that behaviour. This is why observational learning is so efficient: we learn from others’ successes and failures without having to take the risks ourselves.
Ultimately, these complex issues show us that “learning” is a rich, dynamic process. It’s a constant dance between the vast, automatic processing of our non-conscious mind and the focused, cognitive power of our conscious thoughts. We learn from our own experiences, but just as powerfully, we learn from the experiences of others.
