Digital platforms have transformed how students access knowledge – from YouTube tutorials and online courses to collaborative study groups on social media. But beneath this promise lies a set of real, persistent challenges that educators, policymakers, and students themselves grapple with daily. The transition to digital learning is not simply a technical shift; it is a social, economic, and health-related one. Understanding these challenges is the first step toward addressing them responsibly.

The digital divide: who gets left behind?
The most foundational challenge of digital learning is also the most inequitable one: not everyone has equal access to the internet or digital devices. According to the OECD, the digital divide refers to unequal access to digital technologies – covering internet connectivity, device availability, digital infrastructure, and skills – all of which result in unequal opportunities for learning and participation. While students in urban centres with high-speed broadband can stream lectures and access rich online resources on demand, many peers in remote or rural areas remain dependent on outdated 2G or 3G networks that struggle to support even basic online coursework.
The numbers are stark. As of 2024, 2.6 billion people worldwide remain offline, with internet access in low-income countries standing at just 27% of the population compared to 93% in high-income nations. In Africa, three out of five young people aged 15 to 24 cannot access the internet, while in Europe that figure is just one in twenty. The COVID-19 pandemic sharpened this divide further: only school systems with digital infrastructure could adapt to fully online learning, leaving millions of students – disproportionately from low-income families – behind.
The gap is not just about hardware. Research published in the International Journal of Information and Learning Technology identifies the affordability of devices, infrastructure limitations, and limited digital literacy as the main drivers of the divide, noting that these factors impair both teaching approaches and student learning engagement. Gender compounds the issue further: a UNICEF report found that 9 out of 10 young women in the world’s lowest-income countries lack internet access, linking digital exclusion directly to broader gender inequality in education.
Health hazards of prolonged screen time
Even for students who do have digital access, extended screen use brings its own set of problems – physical and psychological. Learning online means spending hours in front of a screen, and that sustained exposure has measurable consequences for student health.
Physical toll on the body
Research published in the National Institutes of Health (NIH) identifies the most common physical hazards of excessive screen time as eye strain (also called computer vision syndrome), neck and shoulder pain, and back pain. These result from both prolonged screen exposure and the poor posture most people unconsciously adopt while using digital devices. During COVID-19 school closures, children’s screen use increased by an average of 11.5 hours per week, intensifying musculoskeletal issues and eye strain to a degree not previously seen in younger age groups.
Mental health at risk
The psychological risks are equally serious. A longitudinal study from UC San Francisco found that more screen time was linked to more severe symptoms of depression, anxiety, inattention, and aggression among children aged 9 to 10, with the effects remaining consistent over a two-year follow-up period. A comprehensive review found that excessive social media use is associated with cyberbullying, psychological distress, poor sleep, body image issues, and hyperactivity – all of which interfere directly with a student’s capacity to learn. The Ontario Psychological Association notes that the content students consume – unrealistic body images, negative news, or distressing videos – plays a significant role in heightening anxiety and depressive feelings, independent of total screen time.
Variable content quality and the credibility problem
Traditional education is built around structured, curated curricula – textbooks reviewed by experts, lessons designed by trained educators. Digital learning, especially when it relies on social media platforms, lacks that gatekeeping. The result is a landscape where high-quality resources coexist with misleading, shallow, or outright false content.
A study on misinformation in online learning identifies the sheer volume of online information as one of the primary obstacles educators face: distinguishing credible content from falsehoods is increasingly difficult when misinformation is packaged to look professional, complete with citations and polished design. Research in the Journal of Research on Technology in Education points out that on social media platforms, all sources tend to look the same regardless of credibility – a Wikipedia article and a peer-reviewed journal can appear visually identical in a platform feed, making source evaluation far more challenging.
Students are increasingly turning to social media for information. A 2024 Pew Research study found that four in ten young adults regularly get their news from TikTok. Yet research shows that 94% of teens believe schools should teach media literacy – while only 39% report having received any such instruction at all. The solution increasingly recommended by educators is lateral reading: the practice of evaluating a source by searching for background information about its author or organisation in a separate tab, rather than judging a claim by its presentation alone. The American Psychological Association reports that students who completed structured lateral reading lessons were significantly more accurate at assessing source credibility than those who did not.
Distractions and the limits of digital collaboration
One of the most underappreciated challenges of digital learning is how hostile the online environment is to sustained attention. Notifications, social media feeds, messaging apps, and auto-playing videos compete continuously with course material. Unlike a physical classroom – where the social contract and physical separation from distractions aids focus – a digital learning session on a laptop or phone means studying alongside an entertainment platform, often in a home environment not designed for concentrated work.
Beyond distraction, digital learning also struggles to replicate hands-on, practical experience. This is a meaningful limitation in disciplines where supervised, real-world practice is essential. A medical student can watch a surgical procedure dozens of times on video but cannot develop clinical judgment without physically performing tasks under supervision. An engineering student can follow a simulation, but building and testing a physical prototype requires lab access that no digital platform can replicate. While digital collaboration tools have made group projects and peer discussion more accessible, they cannot substitute for the tactile, embodied learning that certain fields demand. This is not a minor gap – it affects the employability and professional readiness of graduates in technical and vocational fields.
Security concerns in online learning spaces
Using social media and online platforms for learning raises serious data security and privacy concerns that many students and institutions are not fully equipped to address. Educational institutions store large volumes of sensitive data – student records, financial information, health details, home addresses – making them attractive targets for cybercriminals.
Microsoft’s Cyber Signals report found that 43% of higher education institutions in the UK reported experiencing a cyberattack or data breach at least once a week. In 2024, the education sector saw a significant rise in ransomware incidents, data breaches, and phishing attacks that disrupted learning environments and exposed personal data of students and staff – including incidents affecting hundreds of thousands of students, as seen in the Toronto District School Board breach. Despite this, most schools allocate less than 8% of their IT budgets to cybersecurity, with one in five committing under 1%.
For individual students, the risks in online learning communities are more immediate and social. Sharing personal opinions, academic work, or identifying details in online discussion groups can expose students to cyberbullying, targeted harassment, or exploitation of their data. The U.S. Department of Education warns that student data compromised through school systems can be misused for bullying, identity theft, tracking, and other forms of targeting – especially when students are minors. This climate of insecurity can actively deter participation: students who feel unsafe sharing their thoughts or identities online are less likely to engage deeply with digital learning communities, which undermines the collaborative potential these platforms are supposed to offer.
Digital learning is not going away – nor should it. It genuinely expands access to knowledge, enables flexible study, and connects learners across geography. But its challenges are real and unequally distributed. Addressing them requires deliberate effort from governments, institutions, educators, and platform developers alike. Schools must prioritize cybersecurity and data privacy as core parts of their digital infrastructure, not afterthoughts. Media literacy must be embedded in curricula so students can navigate information responsibly. And the digital divide must be treated as a policy emergency rather than a background condition – because as long as access is unequal, the promise of digital learning will remain fulfilled only for those who were already advantaged.
